Modern Vintage Med (single ply) is an excellent choice for snare batter heads. Has a slightly more muted sound compared to a regular coated head but still very open ...I'm guessing more like a calf skin. The coating has a yellow/brown tint to it and is very durable. I prefer the MVII for toms but if you want a brighter tone this is a great choice.

I have been using these heads during rehearsal with a big band. Good sound, easy to tune with a DrumDial followed by ear. I hand tightened the lugs, then added a full turn with a drum key and pressed on the center of the heads a couple of time to seat them. A couple of days later I came back with the DrumDial and tuned, followed by tuning by ear. So far so good with about 10 hours of rehearsal.

These things sound great on my toms... I used them for years and at length too... Tried out some Evans 360, which sounded good for a minute but died quickly. These will sound great for a long time... they also require little to no muffling.
