The battery compartment is screwed in place. No chance of child swallowing the two AAA batteries. The engine runs very well at a pleasant pace. The three people included add to the fun as they fit into the engine and rail cars. They all fit and run on a couple of different wooden tracks.

If the batteries are in it, they don't work and there isn't a way to access the battery door without a triangle shaped tool (not included). No instruction manual. No plastic wrap around pieces--just placed in a box and coved with dust. Due to quality and missing parts, it's being returned.

**Update, there IS a back panel that is the actual battery compartment!! It is on the BACK on the train not the bottom! My son love the little train even without being able to access the battery area at first.. after looking at it for awhile I finally found it and now my son loves it even more it has noises and moves!! Thank you for the refund I recieved, I will look for more products in the future and carefully look where the batteries go! :)Triangle screw driver doesn't exist. If going to create this, give the tool we need to be able to access it. Have to return basically as soon as it has been shipped. We have a huge tool shed, my Dad works on everything and we do not nor has he ever seen a triangular screw driver!

I would have liked more than 3 train cars but at least there are three "villains" included as well. Just simple plastic but will work fine with the tracks we already have.
