Feather Pen and Ink Set Calligraphy Kit for Beginners,Feather Quill Pen Ink Set,Antique Calligraphy Pens for Writing,Fountain Dip Pen for Calligraphy & SigningI got this set for my daughter, who was pleased with it. I'd rate it pretty well overall for a certain type of kid or adult who likes rituals. My everyday writer is a fountain pen, but a dip pen is a whole other world--and a calligraphy dip pen is a different universe. Expect a big mess as you learn how to use them--especially the wide calligraphy nibs. The kit comes with a pen stand, two pens with removable nibs (both pens are pre-loaded with normal writing nibs, and they're nice fine and medium writers, and they're nice and smooth. The nibs are easy to remove and replace, and there's a sort of friction-fit apparatus that holds them securely. The pen stand has a little holder for the bottle of ink of your choice. The ink bottles include rubber stoppers under the cap--do not leave out the stopper, or you'll regret it (ask me how I know). The stopper keeps the bottles from leaking but can be messy to take out and put back. The black ink is a pretty workmanlike, opaque ink, but all of the colored inks are very watery. They might be nice for art, but they're not great for writing. I would knock it for the watery inks, except at this price point and sort of novelty set, you can't really expect fine inks.My daughter thought the steampunk feather pen was very cool. There was a blob of glue showing in back, but it looked just as pictured from the front. The other pen was more to my liking from a writing perspective (lighter--my everyday writer is a kakuno, so I like a lightweight pen), but the sections weren't well fitted or glued, so every time I switched out a nib, the pen came apart at the middle. We'll probably glue it together. The set doesn't include any instructions or guidance, but it comes in a nice little magnetic storage box and overall is very giftable.Not a luxury set or anything, but very fun set for the price, and a nice way to play around with fountain pens and calligraphy without investing in an expensive set.

I really wanted to like this set. The feather quill was a good idea and I liked all the accessories that came with the set, including an additional dip pen. It is packaged nicely for a gift and presentation was top notch. I appreciated how there were rubber stoppers to prevent the ink for leaking. My appreciate really ended there though. First of all, the included inks are way too wet, and feather wildly on many type of paper. Although the colors looked good, I found them sort of useless. Secondly. the pen stand can only stand up straight with the feather quill only if there is a bottle on top of the stand as well (where there is a space for it). Otherwise the top heaviness of the feather with all the decoration on it, makes the stand unstable without a bottle counterweight. The feather quill itself is a bit top heavy with all the decoration on it while writing, and if you have larger male hands, you might find that stuff getting in the way. Lastly, the other nibs are manufactured differently than the fine nibs that come on the feather or the dip pen stylus. The nibs that come on the feather and dip pen work well. They take up the ink and lay it down consistently. The extra ones are terrible. They are inconsistent, highly scratchy and have an odd flow. I thought it might be the included inks in the set, so i used my most well-behaved Montblanc ink to test the nibs, but even that was a mess. Very heavy for the first couple of strokes, then really dry and friction-y thereafter. Really strange nibs. In short, I really wanted to like the set but found the execution extremely lacking.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well crafted this set is. The accents on the quill are metal and quite pleasantly weighted. Both the pen and the quill feel good in the hand, and the ink writes smoothly and dries quickly. The stand for the pen works well, and can hold a bottle of ink and the pen without wobbling or toppling. There are many different pen tips to choose from included in the set, and I'm excited to try them all out! Especially for the price, it is quite well made and has been a pleasure to write with.One of the bottles (the purple ink) had a small leak that I was able to remedy by adjusting the rubber stopper. The ink does have a smell to it, that while not unpleasant, is worth noting. That said, I don't exactly go around sniffing ink pots, so it could be an entirely ordinary smell! If you like the look of the set, I do recommend it. It's a great price for a set of this quality. It has a good variety of colors, and would probably appeal to a steampunk fan. One thing though, for beginners: don't fully submerge the tip in the ink! Just a little ink goes a fair ways. Additionally, the ink washes off well even with a dry cloth. I accidentally covered my fingers in it while dipping my pen a bit too enthusiastically and it washed away easily. I wouldn't go spilling it into your carpet, but if you get it on your hands or your desk I wouldn't worry over-much.
