It helps to minimize flare and does so by deflecting stray light from entering the lens. The hood also provides protection from accidental impacts, bumps, and scratches that may occur.

This lens hood fits the lens as it should and has protected my lens from several nasty falls when the wind was too much for my tripod. I would recommend it for that protective factor alone!

This lens hood does what lens hoods are supposed to do--and since this one's made specifically for my Canon 10-18mm lens, there was no guesswork whether or not it would work. Even at 10mm, there's no vingetting from this lens hood. It's made of quality plastic. Not felt-lined like some of the fancier "L" lens hoods, but that's fine. It twist-clicks into place--there's no "button" release or anything. Really simple to use.I recommend using this lens hood for anyone with a Canon 10-18mm who wants to cut down on unwanted lens flare.

I saved all the money that I had to get this original lens hood from Canon. I bought the EF-S 10-18mm and I saw at the page that it had a lens hood to buy so I bought the after market one. The after market lens didn't fit so well and at some point I almost broke the lens because the fit didn't match perfectly. Like I say, if you want the fit you need to put the money in for it. Overall, I'm happy that I got one now!

Canon OEM lens covers are not exactly a bargain, but they are well made and have a perfect fit as you would expect. Aftermarket lens hoods are available at less than half the price and I would not fault anyone from going this route if money is tight. My view is that you will get many years of use out of the product so saving $10-$15 is not that critical. I can recommend this product highly other than the price.

I cringe when I see photographers using expensive lenses without lens shades. Lens hoods not only counteract lens flare, but act as a cushion if the camera is dropped...which happened to me, leading to my buying this. The lens hood took the impact and cracked, but the lens was unscathed. This is OEM and perfect Canon quality.

Does a great job and stays on nice. I went with the Canon brand because I read reviews that the aftermarket brand doesn't stay on well. I am glad to finally have a hood to protect my lens from an accidental bump. I go hiking a lot so I have bumped my lens into a tree before. You can also flip it around to store it in your bag.

The good...1. Fits on the lens no problem - I have the , and it clicks into place with no real fuss. If you are wondering how to install it, there is a red mark on the lens that you line up with the red mark on the hood, and then turn until it pops in place. Oddly, this places the Canon branding on the underside of the lens. Not something I care about specifically, and you can also install the hood so that it is face up if you want, but I'm going somewhere with that (read on). Also worth pointing out, the hood can be installed in reverse for storage, which is very handy!2. Works good - Cuts down on the glare effect, also can be used with filters, such as a UV or polarizer. I will say that I don't really suggest a UV filter through, the lens hood should be fine for protection. And since the lens already filters UV light, then it is basically a waste of money. The hood on the other hand provides a shade over the lens, which has an enhancing effect on the color in your photos, so that is why I always suggest the lens hood for just about every lens. For a landscape lens like the 10-18mm, it's pretty much a must.3. Looks good - Nice matte finish, blends in well with my lens. Makes onlookers think you are some kind of pro, with really cool gear. While that doesn't make it work any better, it's still a great conversation starter! The bad...1. The cost. I paid 25 USD for mine. I know there are cheaper ones that are 3rd party, but I can't speak for their build quality or usefulness. The difference in price makes the others look appealing enough to try. It is hard to say that one plastic hood is any better than another, but I knew the Canon would work just fine, so I ponied up the extra dough, since this was my first lens hood. Maybe on one of my kit lenses I will try one of the cheaper ones, and then compare. I am taking a star off for the price here, since I feel that 25 dollars is overpriced in spite of the advantages I have listed, as I am sure one of the less expensive options will likely be fine. If this was 15 USD instead of 25, this would be a 5 star item. I mean come on, it's a piece of plastic that the branding isn't even visible on when you install it on your lens! (see why I mentioned that earlier?) Normally I wouldn't take stars off for price, but I really feel this is the case here, since brands like promaster make good quality hoods for less than the cost of the Canon in most cases, not to mention the other brands out there. Otherwise, I have no other gripes about this product, and if the 10-15 dollar price difference isn't enough savings to try a non-Canon version, then this hood is going to work for you.UPDATE - I have gotten some other hoods, and have had mixed experiences. I got a cheapie 9 dollar hood for my 55-250mm (Fotasy), and regret not getting the Canon version, since the hood barely stays on the lens, so never again with that brand. I got a Promaster hood for my EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM, and it fits great, though it needs a little breaking in (clicks into place hard). It was 35 versus 50 for the Canon. Both hoods do their job, but for the money, I really would rather have just got the Canon version for the 55-250mm lens, where I know that it fits and works just fine, but the promaster was a suitable substitute for a lower price. I do think that the hoods for Canon are still overpriced though, and in the case of the more expensive lenses they should be included. (My 830 dollar 17-55mm F2.8 did not come with a hood, seriously Canon? Sigma includes the hood for all their lenses!)

Fits perfectly fine. I don't know why some people are worried about buy it and instead buy a cheap one, when this one is perfectly fine. I have tried the cheaper ones and they just do not compare, at all....to each his own, but I Love Canon hoods, its a reaffirming fit on a beautiful lens, and it works wonders.

Love. Love. Love the Canon EFS 10-18 mm lens. If you're looking for a wide-angle lens for your cropped-frame camera (I use the Canon 60d)...get it!! It's $300. I got the lens (and hood) in October 2014 before heading to Machu Pichhu and was thrilled to have the lens. The photos turned out amazing. It has a focusing distance of under 1 foot. This lets you get close and stay wide. The image quality is superb. This lens hood is the manufacturer's recommended hood for the Canon EFS 10-18mm. It's made of very sturdy plastic to help protect the lens and works great without getting in the way. This hood was the same price on Amazon as elsewhere and has free two-day shipping. What's not to love?
