The DEBETOOL Cast Iron Scrubber is a capable scrubber, especially for projects like scrubbing out the bbq or the bottoms of pans with years of ... who knows what ... burned onto them. However, for every day cleaning of cast iron and carbon steel pans, I find them to be overkill, and even potentially damaging.When I used the DEBETOOL Scrubber on my cast iron frying pan, my carbon steel wok, and my carbon steel frying pan, I found it to consistently scratch right through the seasoning ... into the bare metal of the pans. As a comparison, I have also cleaned all of these pans previously ... both with and without dish washing soap ... with nylon scrubbers, nylon scrub brushes, steel wool, iodized salt, kosher salt, bamboo pot scrubbers, copper kitchen scrubbers, chain mail scrubbers and Barkeeper's Friend.I did, however, find some differences in the results of my pans. I'd say that clearly the exact makeup of cast iron ... or carbon steel ... makes a difference, and they're not all the same.When I applied the Scrubber to my carbon steel wok, even as gently as I could, it scratched the black seasoning right off of the steel. For me, unless I WANT to completely remove all of the seasoning and clean the pan down to bare metal, I'd say that this brush is too rough and scratchy. However, if I DO want to clean this particular wok down to bare metal, I think this brush would be an especially helpful tool for the job. My wok is dimpled, which makes it more difficult to clean out the dimples. This Scrubber easily flexes into and out of the dimples. My typical every day cleaning tools for my wok are nylon scrubbers, salt, chain mail, and perhaps best of all, the bamboo pot scrubber.Using the Scrubber on my cast iron frying pan got me much the same results as with my carbon steel wok. The bristles scratched right through the seasoning on the surface of the cast iron, down into the bare metal. Again, I'm thinking that this brush would be a good tool for completely cleaning and smoothing the surface of my pan down to bare metal, and then re-seasoning the pan. But for every day use, the DEBETOOL is too rough. My typical every day cleaning tools for this pan are the same as with my carbon steel wok.I got slightly different results when I used the Scrubber on my carbon steel frying pan. I'm thinking that the steel in this pan is "harder" than in my wok or my cast iron skillet. The DEBETOOL brush still cut through the seasoning on this pan, but it took longer. And the result of the scrubbing was a nice and smooth bare metal carbon steel surface. Again, I think that using the Scrubber for every day use with this pan would be too rough. But, it would be good for completely cleaning and resurfacing the pan. Again, my typical cleaning tools for this pan are the same as above.For me and my pans, I was surprised that the brass bristles of the brush cut down to bare metal so quickly, and even sometimes cut INTO the bare metal. These brushes are best used for really tough cleaning and scraping jobs, in my opinion. Start easy with your pans, and work your way up to more ambitious scrubbing. And if you are cleaning a carbon steel or cast iron pan down to bare metal, or you have a really dirty bbq ... or rust to clean up ... these brushes could be just what you need.

These cast iron scrub brushes definitely help to get hard, baked on residue off the bottom of my cast iron pans. The brass bristles are sturdy and the handles are easy to grip. However, I have found it difficult to clean the brush off after use. The bristles are now black and still hold onto some of the grease from the pans. I haven't noticed an odor coming from them yet, but I have been hestitant to store these under my sink with other cleaning supplies for fear that they might cause leftover odor or reside. Otherwise, I am happy with this purchase for the price.
