The flange on the attaching bolts have an interference fit with the timing cover lip and curved edge on the opposite side the bolt flange. When tightening the bolt, the bolt flange would deform the lip of the cover and cut into the side of the cover before making contact with the flat surface of the cover. The torque of the timing cover is only 45-lb-in and that value would most likely be reached too early and the gasket under the cover might not seal properly. In addition, since the bolt self-locking feature would not be making contact with the flat surface of the cover, it might come loose and fall out causing an oil leak.

The part fit like it should. Looks nice. Crank seal already installed which is helpful. Provided bolts have 3/8 heads on them so there is more room to get a socket on them. Just installed so cannot comment on whether chrome lasts or not.My problem was with the timing cover to pan gaskets. I didn't like them because they are straight which makes them difficult to install. The same gaskets that come in an oil pan gasket kit are pre curved so they fit much easier. Also there are two of the gaskets. One for early chevy and one for later chevy motors. I tried the one that was supposed to be for my motor, the smaller one. There was a large gap left between the ends of the gasket and the block. So I used the other one which felt like it fits but was a pain to locate due to the above mentioned straightness of the gasket. Don't know if it works or not yet because the motor has not been run. Someone on the internet was claiming that these aftermarket covers always take the larger cover to pan gasket regardless of what year the block is. Who knows if they are correct or not.I would recommend anyone buying this package to get the pre curved timing cover to pan gaskets for easier installation.
