I got these for actually creating long-term steam in my oven for my sourdough bread loaves. I had read that you can put lava rocks into a pan with boiling water, and it will produce consistent steam. I used them today for making my sourdough brioche, and it worked extremely well! These are MUCH heavier than what I think of as lava rocks. These are more like slightly porous rocks. They came extremely dusty, but I just put them in the sink, filled with dish soap and hot water, swished around, rinsed, and dried. They came out perfectly clean. I’ve tried spraying the inside of my oven with water, but it doesn’t last very long. After 20 minutes, when I went to get the boiling water covered stones out, there was still a ton of steam inside the oven. I won’t use so many next time because of the weight, and because they’re so effective. I will probably even split them into 2 groups and use 2 different pans. That way if I’m baking 2 loaves at once, I can use both, but still can use 1 if I only have 1 loaf of bread. If you’re looking at these for decorating, either inside or outside, they’re definitely nice looking stones. I’d consider using them as a filler in silk planters or trees. There’s not enough for an outside bed, but definitely for a potted plant. I’m really happy I got them, and I would recommend them to anyone regardless of your needs.

They are just as pictured online, tumbled, free of dirt and debris.Someone mentioned that these are not lightweight or porous, and they are concrete-like. 🤔What needs to be considered is that the density of lava rock depends on its mineral composition, which can vary depending on the volcanic source.Key points about lava rock density:Mineral composition matters:The more iron and magnesium (mafic minerals) a lava rock contains, the denser it will be.Different lava types, different densities:Basalt, a common lava rock with high iron content, is generally denser than other lava rocks like pumice, which is full of air bubbles and, therefore, less dense.Porosity impacts density:Even within the same lava rock type, the amount of air pockets (porosity) can affect its density.I hope this information was helpful 🤓

I got these 'lava' rocks to use under my griddle burner so I could let it run double duty as a grill when needed. These rocks would serve as grease collectors and then burn it back off for extra flavor. I figured 7 lbs would be plenty, since lava rock is pretty lightweight and porous. This ain't that. These are quite dense, almost like a concrete product. Definitely not the lightweight porous lava rock I'm used to. And because they are so dense, 7lbs is just a small bag of rocks. So I ended up with about half of what I was expecting.
