I have used the real DeWalt 20v heat gun, so I feel I can make a fair comparison. The heat produced by this great gun is similar to the DeWalt heat gun. It's far less than you would get from a 120v plug in gun, but if you have no outlets you can get by for small jobs. The low setting is like a barely warm blow dryer that moves almost no air. The high setting is pretty warm, and a lot more air, but less than a corded heat gun on low.The ergonomics on this are really awkward. There is a trigger release in the position where a forward/reverse would be on a DeWalt drill. This looks right, but feels weird. Then there's a trigger lock below it which is even more awkward. The genuine DeWalt had a different, but also awkward trigger release, so it's no betterBuild quality is ok, but like all of the DeWalt "compatible" tools, it feels cheap compared to the real tools. If you really need a cordless heat gun I would just get this one because for the price it's about as good as the original. If you're expecting corded heat from a cordless heat gun, don't bother, you will be disappointed.

Up till now I've been deferring to one of those low profile plug-in heat guns instead of a full sized one because they're easy to handle and are quickly accessible. Still they were somewhat cumbersome as they're corded and I had to be tethered to a wall socket to use them. This cordless heat gun solves that without much compromise in performance. I was at first skeptical that such power demanding tool can run on a battery, but it proved me wrong! This thing heats up quite fast until it glows and generate enough heat to melt things. The provided nozzles are a plus and fit snuggly. The compatibility with Dewalt battery makes it versatile.

Having a battery supported heat gun make for a lot of convenience. I had to splice some low voltage wire on a ladder and not having the cord dangling was a bonus. It has an LED light in its base, like my Dewalt drill. For it's function it does seem rather larger than necessary. The reason I say that is that it moves very little air on either setting, so I'm guessing the fan is not very large. With a smaller fan, why the need for such a large tool. Looking at the heating element you can see the difference in settings as the element glows much brighter orange on high. Still, compared to my much smaller corded gun which heats the same and moves much more air, it seems like they made this tool large just for the looks (or to match the Dewalt). Without it moving much air, it took longer than the corded gun for the heat shrink to contract. My suggestion to the manufacturer would be to shrink the tool and increase the fan velocity. All that being said, for the price Dewalt charges for their gun, this could be a hard purchase to pass up if you're interested in the portability.
