About this item

  • Narrow rectangular shape needle file for smoothing and shaping slots, corners, and narrow openings in fine work
  • Swiss pattern precision file for removal of material on delicate or intricate parts
  • Double-cut teeth on both sides for rapid removal of material
  • Single-cut teeth on both edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring
  • Knurled round handle for grip

The Nicholson narrow rectangular needle file with handle has double-cut Swiss pattern teeth for precision smoothing and shaping of slots, corners, and narrow openings in fine work. It has double-cut Swiss pattern teeth on both sides for rapid removal of material on delicate or intricate parts, and single-cut teeth on both edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. A knurled round handle provides for secure gripping.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

- I like to use things for a while before reviewing them, meaning I periodically check through my listing of things Amazon shows I haven't reviewed. - The bizarre thing is that this is showing as what I had ordered, BUT what I received back in mid-December 2016 was TOTALLY DIFFERENT... =:-o - I had thought at the time that it didn't look right, but hey, mid-December, busy tie of year, ya know? - The description says 12 x 6 1/2" files, and what I received was one 12 1/2" file...So technically, I guess I should give one star, BUT the thing is that this file *works great*, LOL! The overall shape is square; the filing surface is9 1/2", and of that, the upper, oh, 6" or so is completely flat, squared, and roughly (no pun intended) 3/8" each side. The last 4 " or so remain square, but taper down to 1/4", with one side cut down to the tip so as to allow me to file the shallow 1/4" wide channel I'm making in a series of wood projects. - The teeth are super-sharp but fine enough that it doesn't catch my fingers like my rasp can do, yet sized such that it can handle hardwoods *easily*, even Ebony. Woods that totally choke other tools present no problems to this file, and the best part of that is, I don't have to stress my arthritis by pressing hard; all I have to do is glide the file along the wood. - I've been using the flat end to, well, flatten out cut edges of thin "micro lumber", and the tip to file the channel as mentioned above. I also have been using the edges to trim and square inner corners of things. So in the end, it's probably been more useful than the original item would have been, LOL! - It also *is* a Nicholson file. - It's taken more practice than one needs to devote to using sandpaper, but it works like sandpaper, except better. - and no bits of sand ;) And as above, no stress or force needed, not even to file Ebony or Wenge. - So, I gave this 5 stars because it works so well and I like it so much ;)

I have been impressed by the quality of this file. Its actually swiss made (not just a swiss cut) and the teeth are uniform and even. Definitely a step up from the cheap chinese files, and not even an extravagant price. Recommend.
