Load large end of tool making sure nails are perpendicular to and shanks are flush with base of tool. Position tunneled section of tool over last nail driven and begin setting nails. I think you're better off using a ruler to mark out spacing onto a piece of card stock than using this thing. What a waste of $$ and effort.When this is brand new the holes are too tight on the upholstery tacks and essentially rip the tacks out. When it's worn in some then it won't hold sufficiently.Don't waste your effort.

I couldn't have finished my project without this but I couldn't do as many as I wanted at a time because the plastic wore pretty quickly and they wouldn't stay in. However, it was great to hold even one at a time and space them out correctly so would definitely buy again. Just feel like I'd need to buy another one should I have another project to do.
