Talking about reeds one has to mention also the mouthpiece. In my case it is Vandoren V16 B9. I have several others, but haven't had time to try them yet. I'm going upwards in the numbers trying to get more of that Mulligan type of sound I'm looking for. In my mind I thought that harder reeds could help. And, yes, the 3.5 reeds really got me closer. The best effect was from the Ricos, but the Royal and Hemke came very close. The Hemke had a bit "softer" or "muted" sound. I'm not a fan of such an open/hard tip opening vs. reed combo, but so far it seems to work OK. I also wanted to try D'Addario reeds as I recently faced some "endurance" problems with Vandoren trad No. 3, which should be close to these. I was positively surprised by the Rico (orange box), which people tend to downplay frequently. I've heard that they are identical to the LaVoz reeds (which I generally like). In any case, to me it was a good buy and an interesting study.

These are ... okay. They aren't the best reeds, but they are affordable. With a box of 10, you're certain to get at least a few that are decent.

Rico's 3.5 are not too hard and not too soft, also great for classical and jazz. I highly recommend this brand for baritone, as well as tenor.
