So much more to Dr Hook than songs on greatest hits. Leave Top 40 behind and enjoy the edgy Dr Hook on Sloppy Seconds and Belly Up!

The 3 CD set is great. Some of their best work and now remastered. The last track on the first CD is defective as it skips badly. I ordered a new one thinking it was a bad disc but the replacement skips too. Did some research and it turns out this is a problem others are experiencing. The music is fantastic so I will end up keeping the CD’s even with the defect.

I bought this CD as it was only slightly higher than the one I was looking for, Sloppy Seconds by Dr. Hook. As others have mentioned, I am frankly shocked that this group is forgotten today. My ex-wife and I were fortunate enough to go with our best friend to see them at a small club in Dallas back in 1975, after the initial excitement over their Columbia days had ended, and before they started hitting it big with their Capitol albums. In fact, they played "Only Sixteen" that night [which would later be their biggest hit on Capitol] for us that night. They were an excellent band for a club, and had us partying hard that night! I had their second album, Sloppy Seconds, when it first came out in 1972, and loved it. The lyrics, all by the great songwriter Shel Silverstein, are brilliant. My personal favorites off of Sloppy Seconds are "Freakin' At The Freakers' Ball", "Carry Me, Carrie", and "Cover of The Rolling Stone". The entire album is wonderfully funny, full of the three pillars of rock: sex, drugs and rock 'n roll! But at the same times, there are heart-breaking gems like "Carry Me, Carrie" that will bring tears to your eyes.I also liked their AM hit off of their first album, Dr. Hook's Medicine Show, "Sylvia's Mother", which I have always recognized as more than a novelty hit. Listen to it, people! They do a great version of the song, expressing the anguish of a man trying to get through to his girlfriend, while running out of money at the pay phone [this was long before there were cellphones] and being put off by her mother. The rest of the first album, unfortunately, isn't as great. Marie Lavaux is a great song, but much better by Bobby Bare, who had a country hit with it. The third album, Belly Up! was briefly a staple of FM radio in those heady days of 1972-73, when the radio stations could play what they wanted. Here in Dallas, that meant KAFM. Unfortunately, it faded from the scene as KZEW came on and played a strict "AOR", or album oriented rock list, tightly controlled by the programmers. No more Dr. Hook on the radio, at least until their Capitol days, when they did less sexy, less drug songs. Yes, less fun songs. It is fun to hear these funny drug/sex songs again. And, this album is well worth the money.

I had these albums in my teens playing them on my parents big box stereo jamming to the music like there was no tomorrow. Listening to them now is like OMG, I can't believe my parents let me listen to this stuff, lol.this is not the Disco Dr. Hook, this is the good stuff! you may want to hide this from your children unless you want them to know that you were cool once too;)

I have the vinyl LP album of Dr Hook & the Medicine Show's 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan', which was a Dr Hook's greatest hits compilation at the time (released in the UK by CBS in 1975). This American band were classified as country rock or US folk rock at the time, and their biggest hits are probably "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of the Rolling Stone", "A Little Bit More", "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman", and "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan". Tracks like "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" and "Sylvia's Mother" are quite moving and serious in tone (with Sylvia's Mother perhaps being a sort of parody of such songs). I rated Dr Hook's music as superb and quite unique in my youth (a teenage student in the 1970s), and that was at a time when British pop/rock music dominated the world and my record collection. This CD set has Dr Hook's first three studio albums from 1971 to 1973 and provides most of their early hits and more. OK this CD set doesn't have the essential classic 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan'. No problem though as, despite some repetition, you can get that song and a few more via or as a download from iTunes/Amazon.There's plenty of gritty, powerfully emotive songs similar to 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan' on these CDs, such as: Last Mornin', Queen Of The Silver Dollar, Life Ain't Easy, If I'd Only Come And Gone, Carry Me, Carrie and The Wonderful Soup Stone. Other songs are far more light hearted and satirical, such as The Cover of the Rolling Stone, (Freakin' At) The Freaker's Ball, Makin' It Natural, Penicillin Penny and Roland The Roadie & Gertrude The Groupie (which does have a serious broken heart pathos as well). I'm sure Ray Sawyer and Dennis Locorriere actually cry when singing many of these songs (may be tears of laughter though).Easily a 5* CD set for just over a tenner. Although not rude or having any swearing, Dr Hook albums do have adult comedy themes about VD, masochism and drugs, and so suite older teenagers and adults rather than children. Still I think it's great music even today. In my book Marion Faithfull's cover of The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan isn't as good as the Dr Hook original version either (C+ for effort though). Dr Hook enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "Only 16", "Sharing the night together" and "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (for these later songs and other tracks see ). By their last twelfth album released in 1983, the band had changed direction more towards disco-style ballads. The final band line-up disbanded around 1985, with a few band members (Ray Sawyer, Dennis Locorriere) going on to solo careers. Many of the songs on these early albums are written by Shel Silverstein (a poet, singer-songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter and the author of many children's books that have sold over 20 million copies). Silverstein also wrote "25 Minutes to Go" and "A boy named Sue", sung by Johnny Cash (if you like Dr Hook also check out Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt'). The band members in Dr Hook and the Medicine Show, as in 1975 were: Ray Sawyer (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Percussion, Songwriter), Dennis Locorriere (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Songwriter, Bass Guitar, Drums), Jay David (Drums), Billy Francis (Keyboards), George Cummings (Steel Guitar), Jance Garfat (Bass Guitar, Vocals), Rik Elswit :(Lead Guitar, Vocals), John Wolters (Drums, Vocals), John "Willard" Henke (Guitar).

I have 2 of these 3 albums on vinyl and bought the CD to stay current. I also bought one to share with my 27 year old son. I love Dr. Hook and can't believe I waited so long to purchase this CD. I think it's a great buy for the money. Their ballads are so soulful and heartwrenching and remind me of certain times in my life that are great memories. Their silly songs are just that....silly but they make me smile.

I'm not sure how it is that this band fell into such relative obscurity, as there is a vibe here like no other. Radio stations rarely play anything beyond "Cover of the Rolling Stone", which is such a disservice to the band and the radio audience. There has never been a band quite like Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. This particular CD set is an incredible deal, packaging their first three albums into a two-CD set with some interesting writings in the insert about the band and some of the songs. If there were anything at all disappointing about it, it would be that the order of the songs on both the packaging and the CDs themselves is not the same order as what is actually played on the CDs. A minor flaw, to be sure. If you have ever had an interest in the early work of the good doctor, then this is THE purchase to make. You will not be disappointed.
