They look great in a nice tin box. They come with flint to light them up easy. As a person obsessed with survival I think this is a must have in your bag.

I was very skeptical at first. But I decided to give this shaved magnesium a try. I wanted to make sure it would ignite even with a bic lighter. I asked a question here on amazon before I made my purchase and some Jabroni said if you have a bic lighter why do you need magnesium. Ugh. Thanks for wasting my time reading your answer. Anyway, these shavings will ignite with a plain ordinary strike any where match. As well as with a bic lighter and a ferro rod. I am very pleased. Burns hot, a half dollar amount burns for about 3 to 5 seconds. If you really need a fire, use the entire bag. Use a food saver machine to reseal this magnesium in a thicker bag. It really compresses it down. I would purchase again. Not a great vaule but... works.

I had a bit of a learning curve using this product. First, it is very light in weight. Make sure your mag pile is protected from any breeze or wind. Second, it takes a substantial spark from a ferro rod to ignite. Third, it has a small flame and burns rather quickly but extremely hot. (some report it at 4000 degrees). Solutions to the above:1. Cut the small bag open to expose the mag (don’t dump it, out like I did, and have it blow around).2. The closer you can get the ferro rod and striker to the mag the easier it is to ignite3. As with all fire starting practices, have ALL of you fire building materials close ( this mag burns quickly, I didn’t time it but roughly 20 - 25 seconds per bag at the most) It will light when wet, but keeping it dry and lighting it on a dry surface makes it burn betterHope this helps.

Main problem is storage since these work so well need to keep them in the box and seal that in a Ziploc bag.

Works great and fast shipping. Price is good. I unwind the strands and use jute at a time and keep a few small pieces handy to use with magnesium and ferro rod.
