Whenever I rebuild a Jeep 4.0, I use a high flow oil pump, which improves oil distribution to the top of the motor. Essential to making the 4.0 live 200k + miles. And Melling is the way to go. Don’t cheap out on such an important component. This will not solve low oil pressure issues, as high flow does not equate to high pressure.

The oil pick up installation tool cost nearly as much as the product itself, and you’re likely to use it only once in your life. Highly recommend you fabricate your own installation tool. Recommend you braise the tube into the pump once installed properly.

Awesome oil pump, awesome price, awesome oil flow. It is a little taller than the stock oil pump. Put something on the pump (paint, grease, etc) hold the oil pan on without the gasket, it will leave a mark on the oil pan inner oil baffle. I had to take a ball-peen hammer and hammer my oil pan and baffle down 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch until there was sufficient clearance. But easy to do and unbeatable performance. Higher capacity pump, more oil flow.

To start I thought the engine was on its way out. I’ve only had this pump in for about 20 miles now but from what I can tell it’s doing it’s job. My check gauges light was coming on at idle but now as you can see from the pictures I’m sitting above 10 psi of oil pressure at idle and close to 40 psi while driving above 2k rpms. I also added a picture of my rod bearings just to show that they are not in as bad of shape as I’d originally thought. And just take your time putting the pan back on mines leaking now lol

I used this pump on three (3) 4.0L Jeep engines. 2 1998 and 1 2001. All were suffering from pressure drop. There are as many reported fixes for this as there are people with access to the net. The one I like best is "bad cam bearings". Really? Unless you disassembled the engine and measured the bearings, how would you know? I think this diagnosis is in place of, "I have no earthly idea." Anyway, 2 of these were merely R & R the oil pump with the high volume pump. Cold mornings with 5-30 synthetic, 60 psi at start up, 30-40 at hot idle. On the other, it was an engine replacement with a fitted block. Pulled the oil pump, replaced with this one with same results. Concerned about fitment? I called Melling and confirmed before I started out. So since phone calls are free, there's really no excuse to get all pissy about fitment.May 22, 2023: MAN IS MY FACE RED! TURNS OUT, WEAK CAM BEARINGS LEAK LIKE CRAZY, PRESSURE DROPS-PROBLEM. BUT THE MELLING PUMP GIVES YOU ENOUGH FLOW TO OVERCOME THE CAM BEARING WEAR. SO...I T W A S T H E C A M B E A R I N G S A F T E R ALL.

Nice high quality pump. You have to get skilled with a ball peen hammer to make it fit into a '95 ZJ 4.0 oil pan. I had to "massage" the pan out about a 1/4-1/2 inch on the side of the pan next to the pump
