It's logical, easy to follow, with a page layout and type that is easy to read. In the first couple of pages, there is an explanation of music notation that is handy for a reference, an explanation of the different sizes of ukuleles, information about how to tune one, etc. A little more than half the book is dedicated to learning individual notes (organized string by string). Then there is an explanation of chords and keys. However, if you are wanting to play by note rather than strum, the second half is still useful because you can just ignore the chord information. There are chord diagrams above the songs. They are not tiny, but they are somewhat small, and not all songs have the chord diagrams. You might benefit by also having a book of ukulele chords (a good and inexpensive one is Ukulele Chords by Thomas Balinger). If your foremost goal is to learn to play the ukulele by strumming chords, this may not be the first choice of books for you, but it would be quite useful (and it's inexpensive). I'd get a copy for reference. There's some music theory and technique information (i.e. hammer ons, pull-offs) but it is not very prominent so if you wanted to just play the songs to learn the notes, that would be easy enough to do. Usually there actual songs (often the length of a chorus) to play so having some songs one knows is both motivating and easier since one has a feel for how the song should go. I leave this on my desk beside me as I work and when I need a break for a few minutes, I pick up my ukulele (also on my desk) and play for a couple minutes. Much better than 'spacing out' and I am picking up a new skill along the way. The way this book is set up, it is accessible (visually and instructionally) and easy to dive into for a few minutes. There are other books in this 'everybody's' series that are also worth a look (i.e. popular songs, Christmas songs) and guitar books too. I wish all books were as accessible (both visually and in terms of instruction) as this is. They're staple-bound (high quality) and under 50 pages so they sit easily on a music stand or wherever you want to put them.

When this book first arrived, I paged through it and thought "Another waste of money. I don't care about tabs, I want chords and the book doesn't even get to them until page 30 and there's only 47 pages in the whole book." Well now, having to spend more time in the house, I picked it up again just for the heck of it. Shame on me. This book is a treasure chest. I am learning and relearning more about ukulele playing than I ever imagined! I am learning notes as well as chords and music theory I had never paid any attention to before. I downloaded the free recordings and try to play along. I'm so slow I haven't been able to get past pp.8-9! I am definitely a beginner but if I stick with this book I have hope of advancing a bit. Thanks, Ukulele Mike. May you rest in peace.

I use this book to teach ukulele for all ages. It's designed for absolute beginners who may not know how to read music (I believe reading music is an important skill), but for those who do not want to learn, there's tab for every song. It starts with moving the left hand on the fretboard with single note melodies (right hand can use a pick or fingerstyle) which is the perfect preparation for later chord work. The left hand needs to know how to navigate before complex chord formations are accessible. It steps through the notes in a great progressive manner and addresses chords later on. I also use Everybody's Guitar Method for teaching and FJH's young beginner guitar method. These are great method books for teaching, with clean layouts and of course public domain songs, which is typical of most method books. Some of these songs are originals though and have a more modern feel than Oh Susannah or other songs like that.

Starts with the basics, including how to hold the instrument, strumming, playing notes on each string, music reading fundamentals, playing chords, lots of songs to practice. Everything you need to get going with an uke!

Great book, moves the user step by step through finger picking, chords and several strumming patterns. Love the computer download that comes with the book which allows user to play along with author, which improves timing and technique. I am self taught and find this book very helpful.
