Product Description

Explore Scientific 52° Series 15mm Waterproof Eyepiece

Solidly in the mid-magnification range for most amateur telescopes, the 15mm is a true workhorse for visual observers. If you love deep sky observing, eyepieces in this focal length range not only give healthy increases in magnification, but the contrast enhancement of giving a darker background sky can make all the difference of how galaxies and nebulae appear under suburban skies.

With an apparent field of view of 52 degrees, these eyepieces are incredible!

Explore Scientific Waterproof Eyepieces - Comfort and Quality. The Explore Scientific 52° Series eyepieces are excellent flat-field multi-element oculars that can transform your visual astronomy experience. Expect exceptional quality versus a comparable Plossol.

Another great benefit of these eyepieces is the excellent contrast and ease with which you can gaze, not directly at an object, but slightly to either side. This skill, called using averted vision, is especially helpful when observing faint objects, because using averted vision puts the image on a part of your eye that is more sensitive to light, allowing you to see fainter images.

It is well made. It has clean, crisp images, just not with the scope I needed it to work with. Well within the theoretical limits of my refractor, but then it is theoretical. Had to send it back.

Performs most excellent with my 16” Meade lightbridge plus.

I like the idea that I can wash it after the kids get their grubby hands on it and the women smear it with mascara. But with my scope it is hard to focus. I slowly twist the helical focuser and suddenly a patch of something flashes in the FoV. Twist the other direction and it flashes again. It is hard to get it to land on focus. It is probably down to my scope, which is very finicky about the eyepieces it will let me use.

Optics are little dark but good eye relief.

I’d always wanted to try an Explore Scientific eyepiece, so when ES had a sale, I took advantage of it. I currently own Morpheus, Delites, and Pentax XW, so this seemed to be the next obvious choice. The ES 4.5mm is a 52° high mag eyepiece that handles planets, moon and double stars just fine. Because the narrower field of view isn’t what I’m used to, in my untracking scope the rapid drift time requires frequent nudging, but I’m fine with this. The images are sharp (both on and off axises) and is free of any distortions. Eye relief is suitable if you don’t wear glasses, otherwise you’re better off with something more comfortable such as the eyepieces I mentioned. ES represents the best value you can get; they’re high quality, light form factor, and constructed well, while being waterproof. I’ll probably get an 82° during the next sale, but I’m pleased with this one. In a fast scope (eg I especially like the box design it comes in, and the velvet patch to store the eyepiece in is a nice touch.

Eyepiece seems very well made, but the extremely short focal length is just not that useful to me, once I used it. Hoping to buy a longer focal length in the near future.
