Why is are PVC fitting sockets bigger than their named size?
PVC sizes get their name from the inner diameter of the PVC pipe as they are nominal, or 'in name only'. If you add the thickness of the wall on each side of the pipe, the outside diameter of the PVC pipe will always be larger that the actual PVC size.
What will this Caster Fitting Insert fit?
Important PVC Size Information
This Caster Fitting Insert will only connect inside the socket of a 1-1/4" Size PVC fitting, which has an inner socket diameter of 1.660" or 1-5/8".
- Can be used with threaded casters (requires a nut to secure) or with 7/16" Grip-Ring Stem Casters
- Caster Fitting Insert inserts internally, inside of the a PVC Fitting
- Ideal for when your PVC project terminates with PVC fittings at the bottom
- Not compatible with PVC pipe. For caster attachment with PVC pipe, use our 1-1/4" Caster Pipe Cap (F114CP7)
How to Use PVC Caster Fitting Inserts
Where to use PVC Caster Fitting Inserts
Caster Fitting Inserts allow you to attach 7/16" stem casters to a PVC project when your structure terminates in PVC fittings at the bottom. This allows you to add mobility to your projects for items such as carts and wagons.
Connect the Caster Fitting Insert to the Caster
Connect the Caster Fitting Insert to the stem caster by either of the following methods:
- For 7/16" Grip-Ring Stem Casters, simply push the caster into the hole on the bottom of the Insert.
- For 7/16" or smaller threaded caster stems, insert the caster stem into the hole and secure on the opposite end using a nut and washer (if required).
Secure the PVC Pipe
Insert the Caster Fitting Insert (and newly attached caster) into the PVC fitting at the bottom of your PVC project to complete the attachments of wheels.

It DOES NOT insert INTO a 1-1/4" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe. It is the SAME SIZE as 1-1/4 Schedule 40 PVC Pipe and therefor only fits INTO other FITTINGS that go over a 1-1/4" Schedule 40 PVC pipe, like elbows, T's and couplers. I can still make it work for my project by inserting it into my 1-1/4" fitting. If you need to put this on the end of a 1-1/4 inch pipe, you will need a 1-1/4" coupler to mate them together. Otherwise, it is a good part. I believe this is the part that will fit OVER a 1-1/4 inch PVC schedule 40 pipe here:
