Use Garmin's NMEA 2000 power isolator to ensure sources that could power the bus are separated properly during installation of the NMEA 2000 network. In some cases, NMEA 2000 capable engines could provide power to the NMEA 2000 bus. This power isolator is useful because it makes sure that the power from the engines is kept separate from the system power.

I wanted to split my NMEA 2000 network. I wanted to be able to power the wind vane and wind instrument separately from the chartplotter, VHF and other devices. This allows a stand alone power switch for the wind instruments instead of requiring to turn on all electronics at the same time to just view the wind. But, when all are on, they will all share data. For those wondering, this isolator allows data to flow through, but, NOT power. You will need to power each side of the backbone separately.

It works, BUT... why on earth is there no branch connection on this device or perhaps a power cable? It would of course be powered only from one side, but that would save a LOT of space for smaller boats. I have three of these isolators installed to have a total of four NMEA sections I can selectively turn on. Each of the isolators use about 5 inches of length in the harness between the isolator and the tee for the power cable. This is inefficiently designed and OVERPRICED, GARMIN.

The Power Isolator is designed to allow NMEA 2000 data to pass, however stops the supply of 12 volt power between connections / systems. It can be used as a T connection or inline. (See pictures, copied from google) This is used when you want to isolate two separate back bone networks or stop 12v power from a device from feeding or back feeding devices. For my given use I needed to stop the 12 volt power between the standard NMEA 2000 (12v powered T connection) network of Garmin MFD 7610 & 7607, Garmin VHF & Fusion Stereo, and isolate my Yamaha Command Link Lowrance NMEA 2000 connection to Yamaha hub.On the initial set up of the Yamaha Lowrance Cable (Yamaha Command Link hub to NMEA 2000 connections), it was found the NMEA network 12v power source would back feed 12v to the Command Link Gauges and Yamaha fuel pump with the key in the “off” position.Lowrance 000-0120-37 Cable is the part I used to get digital engine data to Garmin 7610 & 7607 displays. It’s said you can cut the red wire of the Lowrance (white square female connector) to Yamaha hub cable, however if you’re understanding the above you know the electronics listed aren’t something you’d like to experiment with when a less than $20 part is the answer.

We have 2 systems in line but isolated on our boat using the isolator. Works well
