I was reluctant to buy one where the pieces didnt lock together. But didnt want to pay $200 to Orvis either. This thing works great. Pieces connect together well, and they dont pull apart if your stick gets hung. Only used 3 days so far, but this is a perfect option as a wading staff while flyfishing. I read other reviews about bending, etc. I dont see that happening without abuse. Get a good zinger and attach it to your belt.

We’ve not officially put this to use - it’s for my father-in-law, with a weak ankle, to use while fishing/wading. But we’ve used it around to make sure it’s sturdy and will work. It’s been great. It will be great for finding stable spots, but light weight and not cumbersome. It’s great that it folds into 4ths, so it packs away nicely.

This just great for my fishing in streams. Love how it folds up and fits great on my belt ready to use when I need it crossing streams. Good price.Takes only seconds for it to extend ready to use.

Extends easily with one hand. Stable when extended and can support weight. Light weight and easy to manage when collapsed. The rope it comes with is too long, but easily shortened.Only complaint is that the joints get stuck after weight has been put on them while extended. This makes it difficult to break down at times. I havent used it a lot and it is already having this issue so I am concerned that as I use it more, it will get worse.

Seems to be a very solid staff. Too bad it cannot be sized to height. For that, it is a 3 star. Everything else seems top notch.

I have really only one, very minor complaint which is why I am sticking with my 5 star rating. It deserves this rating because: 1 it's cheap and cheap insurance. 2 It has easily handled my 250# relying on it to support and stabilize me in fast running trout and salmon rivers. I am 59 and not as steady on slippery stream bottoms as I used to be. 3 Can it get stuck in the mud? You bet... Easily remedied, wiggle it a couple of times and it comes right out. 4 As one reviewer wrote, it can get jammed together when heavily leaned on - Although I have not had this problem I could see it potentially happening... Try a bit of petroleum jelly or plumbers grease. 5 This is my complaint. Don't put a wrist strap on it for a couple of reasons. The da... thing gets in the way when I grab for the grip. I cut it off. I also see a danger in getting tipped over in fast water and having the staff jammed between boulders and my arm attached - at least a wrench wrist, elbow or shoulder and potential for being dragged under. I CUT MINE OFF. Don't really like em on my cross country ski poles either...So go ahead and be smart. buy one...

Okay... it's been several weeks since I bought this wading staff. I vacillated between the Hammers Collapsible Wading Staff and a few others before I decided to buy. My major concern was whether the staff would be capable of supporting me as I moved down some steep banks to the river. I weigh around 310 and I have a bum right knee so I'm not the billy goat I used to be, but there's trout, salmon, and steelhead that need slaying and it's my duty to keep this world safe for democracy and freedom and I'll be damned if I let those nefarious bastard steelhead get up river without being challenged by my superior angling abilities (yeah...right).Anyway, the bottom line is that this staff supports me just fine and I have supreme confidence that it will continue to work as expected. There's only a few issues I have with it: 1) what's with the 20-ft long tether cord?? It has a cheap little carabiner attached so you can clip it to your wading belt, but dude! That tether could strangle the life out of a small planet it's so damn long. I cut it off because I was feeling o'nry. 2) If you stick this into wet ground - not mud, exactly, but wet ground - like the bank of a river - the staff will separate and you'll have to pull the bottom portion out of the ground in order to "re-seat" all the "break-apart" sections. Not that big of a deal, but I have to admit that I did get a little annoyed. 3) The case. Seriously. Okay, okay... yeah, this staff isn't the most expensive thing but...that case though. So, again... the bottom-bottom line is that this wading staff is everything I hoped it'd be without blowing $100 on a Simms or something like that. It's comfortable, stable, light, and does the job. There are no bells and whistles. That'd just be weird cuz that'd scare away the fish.I did hack it a little bit and indexed a ruler along the length of the staff. It helps me figure out the depth of where I'm standing and measure the length of the thousands of fish I catch (yeah....right).Tight lines, y'all!

I am new to this and wanted support without the high cost. I just spent two weeks on the beautiful Gallatin and Madision Rivers. I used it all the time, it gave great support and comfort in all types of terrian and water as well as getting in and out of some tricky banks. It did get stuck in the mud some times and I learned, as others have mentioned, to twist it and it will come right out. After the first day I did not use the pouch, I set it up and used it as a treking pole through all the varied and diverse terrian we went through to get to our fishing spots. Just clip the adjustable lanyard to a good spot and its always there when you need it. It handled my weight well and the only time I took a bath was when a friend caught a nice trout and I got excited and went to help him with his Go-Pro without using my Waiding Staff and I went down face first... lession learned !!! I would like to know how to replace the elastic cord which will wear out at some point but I could buy a new one every few years and still have a load of cash to buy flys and stuff with.
