V-good results when soldering dissimilar or difficult to solder materials, the zinc chloride formula cleans well to allow solder to stick and flow

Harris SCLF4 Stay Clean Soldering Flux was great for preparing galvanized roofing sheetmetal for soldering. The flux cleaned the oxidation and allow for good flow and adhesion during soldering. The flux residue was easily removed with a wet rag.

Have a neighbor who really likes to play with his big 8-gal tank sprayer contraption for putting liquid fertilizer on his lawn. Big long sprayer wands with nozzles on the end except broken. His was going to try to fix it with epoxy. Not the best idea, because of the smooth steel. My first try with rosin-core solder was a failure. Little beads of solder that did not flow out onto the surface of the steel. I spent some time researching flux (the word "flux" means, simply, "flow"). I was confused and aggravated by the horribly bad job that Harris does with product naming, product labeling, and with information on their web site. They really need to get a product manager to help them out with all that. They have multiple products, at least two that I know of, that are both named "Stay Clean" flux. One is liquid flux, the other is paste. After reading all the downloadable specification sheets, I eventually reached the conclusion, tentatively, that the liquid version of "Stay Clean" is for steel and certain other metals, and that the paste version "Stay Clean" is for aluminum and certain other metals. But because of the really, really bad way that Harris made this information available, I was nowhere near close to 100% certain that this was correct. I was a little more than 50% certain. So I ordered it, the liquid flux for steel, and it worked like a charm. Made my neighbor very happy.

I first started using it in the late 80s for copper pipe and tubing; it’s quick and clean. I’ve used it to repair old iron bowls using just a soldering iron for heat. Great stuff.
