Will not fit a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket. I used a rubber mallet and beat the snot out of this lid, I cut the removal slots one at a time and beat some more snot out of this lid and it will not fit. In the trash with it. Not worth the trouble to send back, probably wouldn't take it back anyway due to cuts in the lid.

Exactly what I was looking for!! Snug fitting..... I advise using a rubber or plastic mallet to secure the lid to a bucket.

If you think the lid doesn't fit the bucket, READ THIS.I picked up a bucket at a big box store and tried to use this lid. Oh man, I thought, I must have got the wrong lid. Then I read the description and though, DANG, it says right there it only works on their buckets. NO. It works on a normal bucket.BUT, you need to take a cutter and cut where the 'holes' are on the side of the lid. Think of the lid like one on those big 5-gallon paint buckets you get. The lid is sealed on, no way to get it off, until you cut those holes to create flaps.SO, cut the lid at every hole on the lip, and your lid will fit the bucket perfectly. It will still be a bit hard to get on and will seal perfectly. No leaks.Great lid. Would be 5-stars if I didn't have to struggle with figuring this out.

This lid is _very_ tight, which is a feature as I use it for a bucket of corn syrup in my kitchen, and the risk of the lid popping off if dropped is a major concern for me.This lid cannot be attached without a *rubber* mallet, and most of the reviews complaining of it being too tight probably aren't using the right tool. Carpentry hammers don't work because they bounce too much and their striking surface is too small (essentially, it's an impedance mismatch issue).

Works great on a pal for used motor oil. Just use a rubber mallet to help secure it.

I got this to collect old engine oil from oil changes in my garage. Then I can take the 5 gallon bucket to my local auto parts store for disposal. The lid fit an orange HD bucket, but it was too small for a green menards bucket.

We bought this for one use and ended up switching it because I could not use the cap due to arthritis.I could push it down to close it but not get it to release. My husband has now decided it could store our salt to spread on the walks. It keeps it dry until we need it and easily pours into the spreader or just straight from the spout and is easy for him to seal back up.
