Variable valve timing solenoids (VVT) are an electromechanical device that control oil flow to the engine’s cam timing system. The powertrain control module (ECM or PCM) sends electrical pulses to an electronic solenoid that will move the mechanical portion of the VVT system depending on engine load and speed. The VVT system can advance or re-tard cam timing by altering the duration of time the valves stay open and valve overlap (time the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time), this will give the engine the best possible performance, fuel economy, and lowest exhaust emissions under all operating conditions.
For the VVT to properly perform it is imperative that the motor oil condition be clean, be at full capacity and be of the proper oil type for the engine application. The VVT system requires proper oil pressure and viscosity to work correctly. If the oil is contaminated or low when the VVT is commanded to move there will not be enough oil volume to change cam timing and a trouble code will set. Located on most solenoids are screens, or filters, which protect the solenoid from internal damage due to contaminates. Following your vehicles recommended maintenance schedule is imperative for extended life and wo-rry-f-ree operation.

crappy items! almost ruined my engine! I replaced both when doing timing chain service, then the error code 2d60 and 2c57 appeared every 3 or 5 warm starts and the engine was put into limp mode thereafter, which means engine timing was off. didn’t know what’s wrong for almost a year until replaced them with the original ones recently, all the errors disappeared.

for 2009 Mini Cooper r56 base, both worked well and codes gone! Just a heads up if you lose a screw its an m6x16 with 10mm head. part number 11137578545 you can find it online at fcp euro.

I bought these based on value pricing and the seller's Amazon page info and photos, to install on a just purchased high mileage used Mini Cooper. Price seems too good to be true, but it's not, especially after seeing single units priced up to $140+ on auto parts websites. Watch a Youtube video for installation instructions if you are not familiar with it. An easy 1 bolt removal per unit (uses a Torx bit driver, and a magnetic probe to catch the bolt, a slight wiggle / pry to loosen the O-ring grip, and pull it out, reverse to install, tightening the bolt to snug in place and pushing the O-ring in to seal, and reconnect the plug. One on left front of head, and one on left rear of head (Mini Cooper). You may have to loosen and move the air box intake hose for the unit on the rear of the head, depending on year and engine (turbo or non-turbo). Immediately improved engine idol, and gas mileage went from 22.8 to 32+.

These fit perfectly in my 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman. The design is a bit better than the ones I took out because all 3 sections have screens where only the middle section of the old ones had a screen.
