The old units were in pretty poor shape. They could have been used but it was better to replace them IMO.

So, I wanted to do my rear shocks on a 2006 Chevy Aveo. I ordered them (along with the front struts as well... figured I'd do them all in one weekend), and began taking everything off. However, the rear shock mounts would not come off because the top nut was frozen on... over a decade of rust will do that. So, I wound up having to cut them off, because I also needed the boots and foam inserts off them. I ruined the mounts when I cut them off, but found these on Amazon (before I did the cutting) and crossed my fingers and hoped they would fit. I received them a few days later and to my pleasant surprise, they were and EXACT match. They fit beautifully and I had my new shocks on in minutes (the car was still up on jack stands). I was delighted with these and although I hope I never need them again... I would order them in a heartbeat if I did. My new shocks and struts make my little Aveo ride like it's brand new. I couldn't be happier.

Easy to install. Wish it would have had instruction of how to put all the pieces but that was easily figured out by looking at the existing shock mount and doing the same thing
