Exacy fit for my 2002 Explorer. Took maybe 10 minutes to install. Amazon shows that it is NOT compatible, but it is an exact replacement for my truck.

Like many others, this was an exact replacement for my 2004 Explorer. Same part number, same part. Not sure why Amazon says it doesn't fit.It was a grueling 5 minutes to swap the old part out for the new one.

Symptom-- Rear tail lights staying on after exiting vehicle. Intermittent issues with being able to move the shifter out of park (shifter brake solenoid lockout triggered by bad brake sensor). Pulled the existing switch to verify part numbers. Amazon specified part was wrong. This is the correct part in spite of Amazon. I suggest pulling the part before you order and waste your time. Above brake you will see a green pin. Pull the pin up with needle nose pliers, slide the switch off and unplug by pushing down the squeeze tab on the plug. If the bushing falls out, reinsert it over the stud and into the brake pedal arm hole. Makeshift repair to get it back running while you wait for the part-- pry off gray plastic cover. pry out metal pins. lubricate spring and black plug. verify it moves freely pushing on the plug. spray with silicone. polish contacts with 0000 steel wool or fine grit sand paper. clean metal pins with parts cleaner or electrical contact cleaner. reinstall pins. push plastic plunger and watch contacts come together to verify it works.Cause: Corrosion at the contacts likely creates heat when the circuit was closed at the contacts. I could see black on the metal contacts. One of the contacts melted and fused to the spring plunger keeping it forever in the closed position. When testing if the plastic plug doesn't move when pushed, you have this issue. This failure keeps the switch in the closed position causing the tail lights to remain on all the time even when parked. There were no warning lights on the dash. Original part lasted 20 years.

As mentioned before, this fits a 2002 Ford Explorer even though Amazon says it doesn’t. Took care of issues with brake lights intermittently working and issue with shifting vehicle out of “Park”. Super easy to install with no need of splicing wires. Like for like replacement.

Switch 6218 is the right part. Its with same dimensions like the old one and fits easily with the bushing on the push rod. Earlier i bought motorcraft SW 6282 cuz every parts store from rock auto, aitozone and oriley sold that part n tells it fits but it doesnt fit properly n does not even work if installed with bushing on pushrod and if bushing is removed then its very sloppy fit and metal to metal contact and splicing new connector so that was waste of money to buy SW 6282 motorcraft and double the price. This switch SW 6218 is the right part installed and working as it should. I am very pleased with the purchase and fast shipping. Thanks.

We were unable to purchase this from the dealer. it was discontinued. We looked on Amazon, saw this product. One of the reviews said it was purchased for a 2004 mercury sable, so we decided to try it. It was a perfect fit. No adapting.

Thanks, Paul, for the info on confirming the compatibility with the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. This unit DID drop in and replace the original on my 2002 Explorer XLT as well. The old unit was getting stuck in the "on" position and running down the battery. Even though Amazon (and other car parts websites) say this unit does not work with the 2002 XLT, it indeed DOES fit and work fine. It's possible Ford made some changes that were not clear in the parts registry or for some other reason. I have read that this part originally was spec'd for the Ford Windstar. Regardless, I'll confirm it worked fine on my 2002 Explorer XLT (4.6 V8, 4 door, 4WD). Had it shipped next day and finished the repair fairly quickly. There are no youtube videos (at this date) that shows this exact install on an Explorer. There is a video showing the install on a Ford 150 pickup, and it's very similar. The main difference is that this switch goes on the left side of the brake pedal shaft instead of the right. So, it's harder to get to it, but it's doable.
