What does it do?

NICHE DIFFERENTIAL SERVO MOTOR
A servo motor can be either a rotational or translational motor in which power is provided by a servo amplifier to apply force to a particular system, such as the brakes. Servo motors permit for more precise control in angular positioning, acceleration, and velocity. This motor functions using a closed-loop control system. This closed loop is the action of using the current electrical output and to maintain a desired state. The control action in system is based on the output of the motor. This a positive feedback system to move the shaft.

The price of this unit is slightly higher than the motor kit that is available for sale. The part was a drop in replacement and I have 4WD again.

I was going to re-build my unit with a new motor, but I couldn't figure out how it worked exactly. When I tore the unit apart I couldn't figure out for the life of me how the little motor got power. So I bought this instead along with a new switch and it works perfectly. Nice and strong, seems well built and watertight, though made of ABS or plastic. Its protected by the front differential so should be OK. Very happy.
