I wouldn't use this to keep sewage from backing up, but near the end of my gutters at the rain garden this works well to keep the deeper inlets from backfilling. Mount this in a place you can access it, it needs cleaned occasionally. As far as quality, some brands the plastic was noticeably worse than the adjacent pipe, these feel like a real fitting. The plastic is thick and overall the construction is solid. If you have sewage backing up somewhere research your situation. This probably isn't the solution. But taking into consideration what it does, it does that well.

Seems to be made of sturdy pvc, like schedule 40. I had several fittings on hand and was able to transition from cheap sewer pipe to this quite easily. Don't ask me how as I do not remember. I then attached a short piece of baling twine to the top and buried it to shield the fitting from UV rays. If there is ever a problem it should be easy to un-earth and clean it or whatever. It is very simple and completely take-apartable and fixable.

I am a licensed plumber in two different states. I have worked with Oatey products for many decades. I recently purchased a home that is lower than some of the newer-built homes. There's a pump station a block or so away from my home. In the event of an extended power outage, the sewer could possibly back up to my home since it's one of the lower ones. I bought this Oatey Backwater Valve. It has a big screw top that you can open, and you can see the gate or check valve itself and pull it out to service it and clean it if needed. It would also work as a clean-out.The sewer was not deep at my home; it was only about 18 inches below grade I installed this backwater valve, and I put an irrigation box over the top of it. It's been installed for about 3 weeks with no issues whatsoever.

Oatey is a great brand and has easy access to replace valve if ever needed. Works well. Had it installed with a clean out on each side and Green landscaping meter box for easy access. Recommend using a qualified plumber to get it done right!

This valve worked fantastic! Saved me from a flooded basement and terrace. We have had storm after storm this spring, and we have a large ravine in our front yard for storm water drainage. During long heavy rains, it does not drain fast enough and water sometimes gets up to 6 feet deep. Well our sunken terrace drains into the ravine in the front yard, so when that backs up, it actually pushes water back up the drain and starts filling the sunken terrace! This happened a month or so ago, and we had a huge mess to clean up so I ordered this backflow valve and installed it. Not a moment too soon either! A few days after it was installed on the end of the terrace drain pipe, we got another huge storm and the ravine filled up higher than I have ever seen it. The terrace continued to drain as normal and no water came back up the pipe. The ravine stayed at 6-8 feet high full of muddy storm water for quite a while before going back down. The terrace drained as normal and the basement is bone dry. Worked perfectly.

I have been using this for a different application and it's working better than I expected

This valve looks better than expected. It's much thicker than 4" sewer or water PVC pipe. Looks to be built for, if not like, a brick Schitthause. This check valve is beautifully simple and designed to be, if required, easily maintained.Because the flapper can rise into an upper chamber, it can provide 100% unobstructed passage area thru the valve. Our city's recommended slope for waste water is 4 degrees, which translates to approximately a 1/4" slope, in to out, over the valves 10" length. The way it's designed, when it's installed properly, is that if the top of the valve is level - you have a proper slope. Nice!I'm planning to use this for storm water drainage so it will be located underground and outdoors. To mark the valve's clean-out, I plan to bury an upright pressure treated 2x4 beside the valve's clean-out, to about 6" below grade. This should facilitate for easier location once it's been covered. And on a final note: Thank you Google and Amazon for making the finding and shopping of this product so effortless.

I installed this backwater valve on a storm drain that has very little lateral drop over about 200 feet. Recent heavy rains and downpours have overrun the drainage ditch at the rear of the property, and because of the lay of my yard it was backing up around my house half a foot deep in muddy water. This little guy did the trick. On the very day I installed it, we had a downpour of about an inch of rain in 30 minutes. Yard drained out, and when the ditch got full it was easily stopped by this valve. Worth every penny, super easy to clean, and the Oatey company sells replacement parts if anything ever gives out. Very simple construction.
