VINTAGE 50'S VS MODERN 60'S LP WIRING..... WHY CHOOSE?

AUTO SELECT WITH THE FLICK OF A SWITCH

The all new Obsidian Vintage MKII for Les Paul combines the super popular Traditional Vintage 50's & Traditional Vintage 60's wiring for Les Paul in to one product. You can now choose between the vintage roll back of the traditional vintage 50's harness, and superior clarity of the more modern 60's wiring with the flick of the switch.

Even better, you get a switch for each pickup, so if you want to run a 50's setup on the neck pickup, and a 60s setup for the bridge pickup, YOU CAN.

WHAT IS VINTAGE 50'S LP WIRING?

Allow for some treble roll off when you roll back your volume control for an easy bridge between perfect warm cleans and searing leads.

The 50's wiring mod is a super popular Les Paul wiring upgrade that reverts your stock LP wiring back to the glory days, and the beginning of the Vintage Les Paul. This is our most popular and personal favorite Les Paul wiring.

WHAT IS MODERN 60'S LP WIRING?

Prevent treble loss when you roll back the volume for greater clarity and cut through at reduced volume levels.

The Obsidian Modern 60s wiring is made for clarity and cut through with an improved circuit that will help you retain treble at all volume levels.

Installed in a 2002 Epiphone LP. I had previously installed imperial pots after resizing the holes in the body. Didn't like how that turned out so I bought this. This unit did not line up well with the existing holes and required quite a bit of fitting. Not the 'drop in' I was hoping for. Once installed though, the set up was super easy and it's sounding great.

First things first: Before you begin your install, make sure you have the tools you need. Especially the small screwdriver and tweezers in my pic. They will make the job SO much easier. In fact, they're so critical and cheap, I'm surprised they weren't included.I installed the kit in a '99 Epiphone LP Classic Limited Edition, made in Korea. I did have to open up the holes for the posts a bit, but I used masking tape to make a template first, so the small washers were enough to cover my work.PROS: The instructions are so simple a caveman could do it! As long as you know what kind of pickups you're installing, you'll be fine. **Just be careful not to look at the wrong diagram halfway through the install*The hardware and wiring is of good quality. They really go out of their way, with the instructions and YouTube videos, to make it an easy DIY.CONS: The install was fairly quick, but needlessly frustrating. I'm an electrician and I've poked lots of small wires in small harnesses just like this one, and I've never had such a difficult time! The wires don't want to go in, and once they do they don't want to stay. A light "tug test" pulled the wires out every time. I finally got them seated by pushing the wires much further in than I should have had to. Just a poorly designed wire harness.I mentioned how good the instructions are, but they really could've put something, ANYTHING, in the instructions telling you how you're supposed to orient the pots inside the cavity. The pots aren't labeled 'volume' and 'tone', so how are you supposed to know? They should also have variations other than chrome hardware. It would also be great if they included a couple extra nuts and washers. Things happen and things get lost.

I bought this after seeing it in a discussion group. I'm getting older and not having to solder was great. The PCB fit perfectly into my 2015 Epiphone Les Paul Standard Gold Top. I had already enlarged the control openings for CTS ones I had installed, so it slid in perfectly with plenty of room for the switch and pickup wires.Connecting the pickups, switch and jack was simple and straight forward. i was concerned about the pickup wire sizes but I had no issues using the small gauge wires of my bridge pickups with the connector block. All wires slid in and locked when I released the button.I have a 2 wire HB in the neck and a 4 wire in the bridge. I couldn't feed the braided push back through the ground terminal like they show in the install docs. I ended up pulling off and twisting the braid end and slipped that into the ground terminal. I used the other for the ground from the bridge pickup and the bridge ground wire, odd that there isn't a terminal for that, because I purchased the non-split version. The different wiring is great. Works perfectly and provides the flexibility of having 4 combinations. The 60's setting with the treble bleed was perfect and at low volumes retained the highs. One wish would be for a switch for wiring that would allow 'decoupling' the neck and bridge pickups from each other. All in all this is a really great product and my guitar sounds sweet as ever.Cheers!

I have been comparing solderless wiring control harness kits for Les Paul style guitars and the pro's and cons that come with the different available upgrade kits. This particular Obsidian wiring harness must go into a original hole pattern, dimensionally /layout /or it will not work. As stated on the Amazon page. Enlarging the hole diameter is one thing for the pots that may need to been done but relocating the pot stem location is not advised. My second review will go to a solderless wiring harness that can fit into a original Les Paul pot hole pattern layout and is flexible to be used on a non original Les Paul knock offs and that would be the Mojo Tone. I was ,however, really disappointed that the three way switch did not come with any natural or black knobs on the Mojo Tone. That is a cheap ten cent item that could of been provided regardless if I wanted to use them or not. These switches can use ,8-32, 6-32, on and on, and it should of been provided. Will finish these guitars up and do some sound testing and give some further feedback but at this point they still both have their pros and cons but if it is a true Les Paul hole pattern I lean to the Obsidian.

Not only does it not fit the Epiphone Les Paul, which I knew going in, but what I didn't know was how big and oblong the holes would need to be if I were to install on my Epiphone Les Paul. I cannot use this product on my guitar at all. Sad because I was really hoping to utilize this harness. Craftsmanship seems to be there. But again, I can even test it really.

It was suggested that this wouldn't work with an import les Paul. With a little bit of modification it works great in this Harley Benton. It took an average guitar and turned it into something special.

Does not work well with older style single conductor pickups. The older cotton braid is way to big to fit into the lugs as shown. I got it to work by untwisting braid on one pickup and soldering the other to it the feeding a bit through the lug. That said once I got it connected its a nice product.

Dropped right into a 1986 Gibson Les Paul Custom. No adjustment needed with the exception of an additional nut to balance the height of the bridge volume shaft. Wiring was easy. The whole project took about 20 minutes. Would buy again.
