This is a toy and shouldn’t be considered as reliable. The inner dial sticks constantly and needs to be gently shaken awake during use, I would not purchase again nor would I recommend.

Bought this to replace another old Silva (similar design) from which the liquid had long since evaporated. I'm sure this is just as good. Eventually I will buy a compass that will outlive me. Hope this isn't the one.... Still, it's what I wanted and what I chose. I'm sure it'll be fine.

When I received this compass I confirmed that it functioned correctly. I used it for one hike and then stored it with my hiking gear for about a month. The second time I went to use it, the dial was stuck and would not function properly.There is nothing metal in my hiking storage that would have affected the magnetic strength.

We promised our grandsons some activities in map reading and navigation. I hope they have as much fun with the activities as we are having designing them. This compass is nicely made and not a cheap plastic toy. In an age when everyone has a G P S, I still think the kids should learn to read maps. This knowledge has been invaluable in our out of country travels!

I wanted something inexpensive to help my 8yo son learn land nav. This is perfect. The needle floats freely, the map reading tools are great for the price point. An experienced family member saw it and thought it was a much more expensive model.

Gifted the compass to my 12 year old nephew and he loved it. Lugged it around the mountains for a week and I made sure to show him how to use it. I would suggest a short, easy to read, easy to understand guide be provided as youngsters may not have the benefit of a retired, old fart Boy Scout being around to explain on how to use the compass.
