I read the reviews and also found the mounting plate could be rotated out-of-the-box.Here's what I found and every installation went flawlessly...There are small arrows embossed on the mounting plate. If you align them pointing toward the left of the detector (when viewed from the room side, right from the battery side) then the mounting holes align square to the detector body. The marks on the mounting plate in the picture were my initial attempts to figure out orientation until I noticed the arrows.I measured from a wall to place the unit. Decided which direction I wanted the detector facing and then drilled holes per the manufacturer's instructions.Your results may vary, but look for the arrows and that may help.
