The book is so well written and full of intricate plots and sub-plots. The characters are believable and evocative of the time period.

Robert Goddard is a master story teller. It doesn't get better than this. So many twists and turns, so many subplots and threads so finely woven together. Wonderful, suspenseful and shocking. What a read!

I was hooked from the first page. The story unravels at a furious pace, the characters are beautifully drawn and the mystery holds up to the last. Excellent!

Very typical Goddard. Again, an inter-weaving of the principal plot with many related sub-plots; just to keep the reader on their toes.A pity one cannot give a further half star. It would be interesting to get a gauge on how much research RG puts into his authorship as it certainly shows in his skilful writings. I am glad I still have a few more books to catch.

I'm a big fan of Robert Goddard and have been more than satisfied with most of the dozen or so books of his that I have read. His single greatest novel 'Past Caring' is almost lived up to here as he explores his usual theme of a haunting past having a profound and often tragic effect on the present. The tension and plot is at full steam from page two and does not relent. William Trenchard is confronted by his wife's ex-husband one morning in the garden. A seemingly domestic event which is made more dramatic by the fact that this ex-husband supposedly commited suicide over a decade ago. The man's resemblance to the deceased is striking and soon, as his wife and the surrounding family come to discover, his behavior and memory is spot on to. The key question is - is it him?The journey to find out is destructive and leaves little peace in its wake.Goddard is an absolute master at teasing his audience with twists and revelations and he exploits this skill here as we, the readers, are never quite sure what to think of the alleged impostor. The novel bounces around from different perspectives and the history of these characters is revealed with increasing density. Goddard wields the past like a weapon used with surgical precision creating a sense of hopelessness and inevitability which courses through the plot. The pay off is worth waiting for but indeed you do have to wait. At over 500 pages this book is no easy beach read and with Goddard's usual large cast the drama is not always so easy to follow. There are several moments and several characters who seem a little superfluous and I think that's what makes it inferior to other historical thrillers out there.I heard about this book because it was in Stephen King's top 100. I can see why. The detail, the beauty of the language and the sheer orchestral delight of such a expansive and sweeping novel is to be marveled at to the very last page. Well worth your time.

This novel is of the Jane Austen genre, but not as clever and far more wordy. And it is a mystery, which adds its own twist. I rarely give up on a book and did not intend to stop 3/4 of the way through, but lost interest and picked up another book. I may go back and finish it if I don't have anything else to read.
