What is a Electronic Turbo Actuator?

Electronic Turbo Actuators are currently the most accurate type of turbocharger boost control. It does this with the help of the boost pressure of the primary turbocharger and the vacuum inside the intake manifold.

The actuator is controlled by the Engine Control Unit which measures the speed and load on the engine. The electronic turbo actuator basically consists of an electric motor, a worm gear and a printed circuit board. The input from the ECU is processed by the printed circuit board and gives the electric motor a signal to rotate clockwise or anti-clockwise for a certain period of time. At low rpms, the load is low and the actuator keeps the vanes closed. At higher loads, the boost pressure is higher and thus the actuator opens the vanes to allow the exhaust gases to flow over the impeller. This causes the impeller to rotate at a high speed, thereby boosting the pressure in the inlet manifold.

Electronic Turbo Actuator Problems :

The use of the Electronic Turbo Actuator means improved turbo spool up times and increased efficiency, resulting in more power and better fuel economy. However, the vanes of a VGT (turbo compressor with variable geometry) can become stuck due to carbon deposits. This does not only influence the system’s functioning but could also damage the turbo actuator. A faulty electronic actuator will cause the vanes to open even at low loads or fail to open the vanes when the load is high. This will cause your vehicle to lose power and the engine light on your dashboard will light up. A defective turbocharger electronic actuator should be replaced at once to prevent any further damage to the turbocharger and the engine.

Plastic and cheap. When I saw it I doubted it was going to handle heat and operations. It lasted 2 months because I drove very easily and non aggressively. Now broke. Needs to be replaced again, with all the pain of replacement. Buy OEM even if it's used and expensive.

I used this part on my 2008 Mercedes 320ml cdi, and was skeptical due to the price, but decided to give it a try based on other reviews. It seems that the construction of this varies from the original design and therefore doesn’t have the same issue that is common with the original one. (The small aluminum wire connections that fail). In the long term I do not yet know if it will last, but for the price, and with the ease of install for this part, it would be worth it for me to replace multiple times rather than risking having another factory unit failure at 6x the cost.

I can't speak to the long term reliability of this actuator but so far it seems to work well in my 08 Sprinter. The old actuator was causing intermittent under boost code and limp home mode. I opened up this Chinese and the original actuators side by side for a comparison. Internally the design is very different as you can see. I will update if this Chinese actuator fails.

Getting the jesus christ clip off without losing it was the main challenge. I lost it, as usual, but they're cheap enough to get at the Advanced O'Reilly Zone.
