I am a biochemistry graduate student in California. Conducting research requires that I am able to organize a notebook so that I can distinguish important information easily, and the pen components of the pencil allows me to do that without having to carry around a different colored pen in my pocket.I would recommend this to someone that wants to have different writing options at hand, but does not want to carry all of the different utensils. I also want to make it clear (as I am not sure if it was explicitly mentioned in the listing) but the product has 3 different utensils in it: a red pen, black pen, and a 0.5mm mechanical pencil. (I was under the impression that it was interchangeable with separate ink cartriges).

This is my favorite pen. The ink is dark and smooth. I do not like black ink that is purplish or bluish. This is blacker.Much cheaper than the $50 I spent on either the Cross multi pen or the Rotring. My Cross pen leaked red ink and is ruined now. My Rotring writes in 0.5mm and is too scratchy leaving ugly lines and pokes the paper. My other Rotring the 3 in one Tikky, is too plasticy, has purplish ink, and the lines are to thick and crudish at .9 mm. It is not a good combination, there are better pens like TUL that leave superior marks at .9 mm.The Japanese pens are better than the German made pens. This is true in almost every case. The Japanese are also about to produce higher quality at lower cost. Some German or European made items are over built to be fancier but offer no real advantage in performance or quality. The American made brands are not as good as Japanese pens.I really like Ohto pens and had their now discountinued multi slim. It was my favorite pen but I broke it through misuse. This pen is thicker for a more comfortable grip though the ink is not as dark as it but maybe that will make it last a little longer. Water based inks are darker and more fluid but run out quicker. Oil based inks last much longer but are blotchy and have more broken lines or cheap looking ink. This pen twists to change pen color like the Cross. This is better then the knock system used by Rotring and the Ohto multi slim. The knock style is slower and I have to look at the pen to make sure I know which tip is being deployed,. Even then you have misfires and get the wrong color so waste time trying to get the right one.I feel that this pen is the best of all the pens I have tried and it was also the cheapest, except for the Ohto ceramic Dude. Pentel is a very value orientated company that makes quality products at a low price. For any of their offerings I know that i am getting more than I paid and probably a better looking and functioning product than more expensive brands. This is my favorite pen. These pens are super high quality and have red and black ink. The only thing that would make them better is if they had blue ink as well so i could use red for correction or highlighting and black for main writing with blue as a back up if I ran out of black ink.

Easily one of the best multi pens I've used. Through the last 10 years I have used several different pens. Mostly used the papermate phd multi, at $12 a piece they were good but broke very easily, and was impossible to get refills. I was immediately impressed with how small this pen is. It writes amazingly, very smooth and operates very smoothly. I work in aircraft maintenance so all 3 writing utensils will be used a lot. I am very rough on my pens and wanted to give this one a pocket test. I have used it now for almost 2 weeks and not even the slightest difference. The papaermate would have already lost the eraser cap, this pens cap screws on and is metal, and I would have cracked it somewhere. I love this pen

I was really torn on what to rate this Years ago I was given a combo pen/pencil when I attended a session run by a professional organization. It broke shortly thereafter (but had a lot to do with the fact that I wasn't familiar with what I had or how to use it.) I wanted to purchase something else like it and I found this. The good.If you're a person with largish hands (ie: man hands) this pen has a good weight to it and a decent thickness. It does feel a bit small but then most such things usually do. The pen seems very solid and it looks like I should be able to get refills easily. This is a nerd item and its cool to have. I haven't used it in a meeting yet but its something I like. I have a feeling that this will take some getting used to. The price is higher than you'd expect but so is the quality. Its all metal and it does feel solid. One major pro is that this is made in Japan. My personal experience with lead pencils made in Japan is that they really, really last. They are stolen or lost before they break. I'm confident in the quality. The bad.Everything is in Japanese. I tried to google something about this pen and the Youtube video review was in Japanese. All the instructions for this pen are in Japanese. I still do not know how to load the lead for this pen well. I took a star off for that. I wanted to take more off but there were good points. To load lead you have to pull the bottom half of the pen off and pull out the pencil lead holding tube and insert lead in there (I think). Overall its a cumbersome process. To make matters more baffling. If you pull off the cap at the top and pull out the eraser there appears to be a small hole there (that has been welded shut.) Not sure why the designers couldn't connect that to the tube that held the lead since that would have made filling this as natural as a normal lead pencil.Trying to advance the lead is more of a pain than you think. Also it takes a while and 0.5m lead will scoot back up. The size seems to be larger than 0.5 but its not 0.7. Overall not sure why the pens are 0.7 but the lead isn't.

Superb construction (brass barrel) and robust twist mechanism to switch from pen to pencil function. The real star of the show however, is the Vicunga ink, which is smoother than my Jetstream, Accroball and Jimminestick oil-based pens. Otherwise, in terms of darkness I would rank these as slightly lighter after Jetstream, but more viscous and delivering a better overall writing experience. While it's a good price for a multi-pen (comparable to USA/UK prices, but not domestic japanese $), do not that these pens are exported from Japan, with shipping taking a little over a month to Toronto even with EMS.

Very pleased with this pen and it is still slimline rather than being bulky as most multi function pens tend to be
