About this item

  • Size: 3/8 inch X 5 inch
  • Heavy duty wood screw with 6 sided hex bolt head
  • Features deep wood screw threads and does not accept a nut
  • Used in applications where standard wood screws cannot support the load (deck building, etc.)
  • Requires pilot hole to be drilled and installs using wrench or socket tool
  • Thread Type: Deep, Point Style: Gimlet
  • Specification(s) Met: ASME B18.2.1 and ASTM A307A

Lag screw bolts are used in place of standard wood screws whenever the mounting surface must bear a heavy load. The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

These lags bolts were a good price compared to the local stores in the area.. Never had any bust off or round off when I was installing some fence post supports with my impact driver.. You have to predrill before driving them it to prevent the wood from splitting or busting them off..

I used these 5" x 3/8" lag bolts to repair ice damage to my dock. (Massive amounts of ice can be VERY powerful!) I drilled a 1/4" pilot hole 6 or 7 inches deep and coated the bolt threads with soap for lubrication. I used a ratchet wrench to turn them in. Most went in fine. A couple of them twisted off, breaking a couple inches in. Bolts with higher torque ratings would be a real good idea for this application.

These were absolutely great for my pole barn. I used them to attach the 2/X 6 beams to the retired utility poles. I did, however, have several of them twist off, even though I had pre-drilled pilot holes about 2/3 of the way. But, I was using an impact wrench to drive them in and it is entirely possible I put too much torque on them and it was not the fault of the bolts. Or, it could have been a few weak bolts, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt. But, I'm perfectly happy with them.
