Had to buy this thing because I saw some video on youtube about changing the cable boot by pulling the old one out the back of the hull. Don't do this- you'll stretch it. Doesn't take much. This one worked great and is of good quality.

This is the latest OEM replacement shift cable for my Mercruiser (now Mercury Marine) stern drive. I have a 1990 Wellcraft 215 Eclipse with a 5.0 Liter Mercruiser Alpha I (Gen I) stern drive. All parts fit perfectly. This is the second time I've had to replace this cable in the last 24 years and I highly recommend use of the factory recommended special socket for removing and installing the cable.
