About this item

  • On many trucks and SUVs, the rear glass, above the tailgate, can be opened up to provide additional ventilation or a little extra space for that couch you’re trying to move. The rear glass hinges are what let the rear glass open and close. The hinges are mounted at the top of the glass and attach to body just below the roof. They are usually made of metal. A hinge bolt allows the hinge to open and close smoothly, just like the hinges on any of the doors in your house.
  • Because rear glass hinges are mounted on the outside of glass, they are exposed to the elements.Metal can start to corrode. You may notice mineral deposits beneath the hinges on rear window glass. That’s from water streaking the rust over your windows. If hinge bolt corrodes, hinge can either become stiff or loose. It might be hard to open rear window or keep it open.A loose hinge might eventually give way and let rear glass fall off, which could easily break it. In that case, you need to replace it.
  • This Rear Window Liftgate Glass Hinge Fits the Following Vehicles: 2008-2012 Ford Escape, 2008-2011 Mercury Mariner, 2008-2011 Mazda Tribute.
  • Customers can find the product you need accurately according to the OE number. OE part number: Left 8L8Z-78420A68-D, 8L8Z78420A68D; Right 8L8Z-78420A68-C, 8L8Z78420A68C; 924-123.
  • This Rear Liftgate Glass Hinges Kit comes as a Pair with both the LEFT and RIGHT hinge, cover, and screws. Fits for 2008-2012 Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Mazda Tribute LH (Driver Side) & RH (Passenger Side) Rear Glass. When the factory hinges fail the glass may not open or close properly causing a dangerous condition. Replace your factory hinges at the first sign of failure and avoid breaking your rear liftgate glass.

How to replace the Rear Window Liftgate Glass Hinge?

To remove the hinges, start by opening the rear glass. You’re going to have to open the glass even farther than normal to get the fasteners off the hinges,so you’re going to have to disconnect the lift struts.

Then you’ll have to prop up the glass or have a helper hold it.Next you can remove the fasteners from the hinge and pull off the hinge. Each hinge will come marked with which side it should be installed on.Be sure to install the hinges on their correct respective sides.

You can then reverse the above process to install the new hinges.Once everything is reconnected, open and close rear glass a few times to test it.If the glass seems uneven,or doesn’t latch right, adjust the positioning of the hinges and try again.

To keep it even, you’ll want to replace the glass hinges as a pair, and to mark their position before removing them. This will help you reinstall them in the same place. Before you mark their position, you should scrape off any corrosion and clean the glass.

Was quoted $200 to fix the corroded factory glass gate hinges on my 2009 Ford Escape (mechanic also would not be responsible if the glass breaks when taking the old hinges off). Took a chance and am I glad I did. Put some WD40 overnight on the old hinges and in the morning, while being oh so careful with the glass, they installed beautifully and are very sturdy feeling. Great price too

Easy to install, came the next day, has been installed for 3 months, fingers crossed. Hand tighten don't over-tork. Replaces original Ford part that the vast number of Ford Escape owners have rot out and water leak issues with. Fords replacement part costs five and a half times more money. This should have been a Ford recall item.

If yours broke off like mine and the allen or star fastner is rounded off than just take a small drill bit and drill through from the inside of the vehicle out.....We didn't even need to drill all the way through and we were able to twist it out (don't hit it with a hammer!)

I had paid a dealer over $300 dollars to replace these on my 2008 Escape before they failed. I had one of the factory ones fail on my 2012 Escape while away on a trip. Ordered these so they were at my house when I returned. I replaced them by myself, you just have to detach the glass lift struts with a little care so they don't prang out and break the glass accidently.Once that was done it was just unscrew the old one, clean all the surfaces and re-install the new ones. I did re-use the original screws through the glass because the washers on them were larger than the supplied ones. The replacement gaskets were foam to keep the water out and seemed to be enough.Overall, the job took about an hour and saved a ton of money. If you are the least bit handy you should have no problems. Seeing as the originals lasted 8 years, I expect these to last as long as I keep the vehicle, but if I have to do it again, no biggie.
