About this item

  • Custom Overwound P.A.F - The Duncan Custom is a medium output humbucker pickup that features a small ceramic magnet and custom-wound coils to dish out a ‘P.A.F.-on-steroids’ tone.
  • Distinctive Tone - With tight lows, a bumped upper midrange for added character and crunch, and an airy high end, it cuts through heavy distortion and delivers crystal-clear clean tones
  • Prominent Midrange - This pickup is especially suited for warmer-sounding guitars with a prominent midrange, making it a favorite for Les Pauls and Paul Reed Smiths.
  • Versatile Pairing Options - It pairs well with the Jazz or ’59 neck models, and forms one half of our ’59/Custom Hybrid humbucker set, offering a wide range of possibilities.
  • Made in the USA - Hand built in our Santa Barbara, CA factory, this pickup features a small ceramic bar magnet, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance.

I've been a fan of this pickup since the 80s and using it just as long. While not as popular as Duncan's JB or Distortion, the ceramic mag powered Custom SH-5/TB-5 has been holding its own for decades. This is the pickup I'd recommend for anything from jazz fusion to heavy metal, and everything in between. It has tremendous clarity and cut with high gain, great sustain, harmonics that pop like bubble wrap, and the kind of brightness that gets you heard in a mix. As this is a bright pickup, I'd recommend it most in darker guitars. I've had great luck using it in basswood and mahogany. Give it a try.

In a mahogany bodied PRS clone (25" strat style w/ Wilkinson trem) . Coming from many years using a JB, which I liked for punchiness and ability to coil-split and still sound good, the Custom was exactly what I was looking for: similar EQ to a PAF but more power and response. I tried the Custom Custom, Screamin' Demon, Dimarzio Fred, PAF Pro & ToneZone I am enjoying the EQ - bright enough, solid low end, no mid-hump, but a lot of sweet tonality. Split coil is useful and pairs very well with the Jazz neck, which is a fairly powerful pickup also.

I play a lot of prog, punk, metal, and hard/classic rock. I picked up an Epi Goth '58 Explorer and just wasn't satisfied with the clarity of the stock pups, but loved the guitar, as it plays nearly as well as my Gibson SG Standard. I ordered this to deal with the tone suck and to accommodate the generally wider string spacing at the bridge position with the Tune-O-Matic stop bar. The outer strings are a little off-center, but it is unnoticeable unless you're being nitpicky. I assume it looks better than the regular Custom humbucker. You might want a regular humbucker for the neck position if swapping both.As far as tones, I slammed this thing in the bridge with the stock hardware and, boy, does it scream!!! It lets the Explorer maintain that vintage tone, but with a modernized vibe, and accentuates the mahogany body of the guitar. I ran this through my Helix and it sounds absolutely incredible. A warm, yet tight vintage tone with an aggressive bite. Perfect for the tonal flavors I'm into.I highly recommend this pickup for the Epi Goth '58 Explorer, and Duncan pickups in general. Will be replacing the neck with a Duncan '59. Will review soon.

Sounds great in the bridge position on my Fernandes Native Elite. It has a Floyd Rose-licensed bridge & locking system. A nice improvement over the stock pickup.

I love this pickup. It has a very unique frequency response and it sounds AMAZING through an overdriven amp. It has a very tight low end response, which keeps the lows from getting "flubby" while playing overdriven. It is also extremely high output, so it will drive the front end of an effects chain or amp very well. The Trembucker spacing got my high E string back in play on my Fender Telecaster FMT HH. Not even Fender seems to realize that they should be using the Trembucker models. I recommend this pickup, especially if you play heavy music or downtune. I have a regular SH-5 on my cheapo guitar that I use for downtuning and it sounds freakish.

Sounds terrible. I've been playing hard rock for 25yrs and played with many different pickups. If you like mud and no definition...... this pickup is for you. Lol!!
