Works great on melons, regardless of ripeness, and I also use it on apple halves to take out the core and seeds. Very pleased. The stainless running through the entire tool makes it very sturdy. It has replaced my mom's old melon baller the heads of which are loose on the handle. I see this one lasting a very long time.

Update: this melon ball scooper started to come loose at the hinge that connects the metal to the wood handle. The scoop section broke off entirely. I tried to make the most of it by continuing to use the one remaining scooper, that too broke off. What a disappointment. Save your money and buy a good one at William Sonoma. Cheap things are not worth it.If you're on the fence, just buy it.For $6.99 you can't go wrong.I'm using it to peel ginger and core apples. This might be the last one I'll ever need to purchase.

One of my favorite kitchen tools. The edges of the scoops are sharp enough that you can use this to core apples and to scrape out the insides of pumpkins when you are carving jack-o-lanterns on Halloween.

The king of all melon ballers! One drunken night my friends and I were craving something sweet. One over achiever showed us a Pinterest recipe of strawberries filled with cheesecake. It was miraculous! We realized we had never had the pleasure of injecting a cake into a berry. For the record: spoons don't work. No matter how large or small or bendy or round your spoon might be, you're going to end up with a disgraced fruit. We searched every store locally for a melon baller and none were found. We were distraught. It was on a long miserable road trip I found myself on Amazon prime and remembered our lack of melon baller. This double ended wood plated melon baller arrived in three days and has served us well. My friends gave me so much s*** for buying this I had to find other uses1) great as a spoon if you're on a diet2) it's great for grabbing one pasta noodle to see if it's done without scalding yourself3) good for "weight watchers" portions of ice cream4) if you put your finger over the hole you can very inaccurately measure baking ingredients.I'm sure there are many uses I have yet to discover but if you want to add some excitement to your life, this scandicrafts stainless steel double ended melon baller is for you!

Read all the other reviews and went with the positive reviews. I like the wooden handle design and the two sizes. After receiving, I understand all the negative reviews, even the ones that didn't offer insight as to the core of the problem. THERE IS A PROBLEM. As others do, I always use a melon baller to core apples. Tried this and the handle started to bend right away. Poor handle? Not really. As one reviewer pointed out, the edge of the tool is very wide (for a melon baller). That is why one reviewer commented on essentially mashing her watermelon.I spent nearly an hour with a Dremel tool with a grinder head putting a moderate cutting edge on both scoops - about the same as I what usually have seen on other melon ballers I have owned. Then I tried it out on an apple. "Voila" it scooped out the core very nicely and did not bend the handle. If I had not put an edge on this tool, I would have thrown it out or returned it.With the edge it is a handsome and functional addition to my kitchen tool set.Shame on the manufacturer for not putting at least some reasonable edge to begin with.

I use the melon baller to core apples and pears. After splitting the fruit in half I am able to scoop out the seed area easily. The two sizes on this scoop allows me to reduce the amount of waste from the fruit. The tool is heavy duty and has stood up to coring the denser flesh well. The only drawback to the tool is that it is a bit short. However, this might be an advantage as I am forced to grip the baller near the scoop and prevent overtorquing the tool. The price is very reasonable, so much so that I bought two more for spares.

For the price this was worth it. The larger size is perfect for melon; the little one is too small. The handle is a little short (and I have small hands) so it digs into you when you use it, which is uncomfortable when doing a whole melon.

I've looked everywhere for a melon scooper and was pleased to find a double-sided (w/mini) melon scooper at such a great price. It's a great way to jazz up your fruit trays at parties and it adds a nice decorative touch to fruit drinks or teas!
