SMP PR 484 or BWD 241921992-1995 GM 4.3 CPIMy Recommendation: Do Not BuyApparently this is another more recent example of the decades old, historically respected Standard Motor Products where they traded predictable & consistent high quality products for higher profit lower/inconsistent quality outsourced versions. Worse yet SMP apparently has failed in the past 2 yrs to overcome to the point where their products are at least predictable again - even at a lesser quality standard.Problems with SMP PR484 :1) Would only produce 46lbs of pressure for a 55 lb minimum requirement - with new filter and a new fuel pump that that produced 59lbs right off the bat with another brand of regulator (see below).2) Internal Leak down. Even though no external leaks and carefully reinstalling several times, regulator failed the lengthy pinching off fuel supply & return line test process each time.3) Close inspection of the diaphragm revealed wrinkles permanently crimped in during the manufacturing assembly process.Since the box this came in looked like a NOS from a few years ago, I then purchased a new BWD regulator locally. It looked exactly the same - but of appearing of fresh inventory & box, plus made in Mexico (which I can't remember ever having issues with in recent times). No wrinkles in the diaphragm, and was packed in a nice plastic bag with cautions / instructions. This BWD produced only 48lbs. Adjusting the regulator to get 58lbs required more than 1 3/4 turns (a lot!). But it too leaked (bled) down internally - slower than the first, but still not holding. Reinstalled several times carefully paying much attention to the Orings and cleanliness and it consistently failed.Another small issue with both SMP & BWD was the screen - just a real pain to get installed evenly prior to installing the regulator. Attempting to install as assembled and according to the instructions the regulator would not seat without a lot of pressure and wiggling. I believe the problem to be an increased interference fit. Both the original ACDelco and the Dorman fit snug, but installed easily with the screen attached to the regulator or equally with screen installation only into the FI unit (installing the oRing first of course)After a lot of time testing, retesting, & retesting, head scratching, and starting to doubt my PD abilities, I resorted to a Dorman regulator - more commonly found locally and less expensive - although only 1 year warranty vs SMP / BWD 3yr warranty. Fit easily and even looked of better quality even though of China manufacture (sigh).Net - the Dorman made 58lbs right off and stopped the internal leakdown. Retested pump & regulator - all consistent results.Tweaked pressure to 59.5lbs with only 1/16 turn.....and Life is good again. Finally!BTW for those not aware yet, ACDelco stopped carrying separate regulators for the CPI system and only offer reman spider assemblies due to issues of field installed regulators on higher mileage FI units.o the only choices that I could find for individual regulators were SMP/BWD and Dorman.Since my FI unit had only 22K miles but sat for 3 yrs, I was compelled to pursue the regulator replacement only to the end.10/2022 UpdateHopefully Standard/BWD have reconciled the issues long ago-as has been my experience that the major brands invariably change manufactures every 2-3 regardless. But again it may also be the brands desire to sell an entire assembly in lieu of parts for 25 yr old vehicles. And as far as Dorman goes...... my 2 cents beware. Notoriously poor / or spotty quality on nearly everything of last 5 yrs.they
