For Plants and Trees that with root balls about 12” in dia., (11-15”, e.g. 3-10 Gallon Container Sizes have top diameters between 11-15”) - Uses 99% LESS WATER than traditional tree bag over the course of multiple seasons for better establishment of the newly planted trees and shrubs! When the plant root ball is larger than 15”, the 36”, 48”, or multiple units of these larger sized SteadySpring Tree Mats are recommended to cover an area double of the root ball size or at least 20” larger than the root ball.
Keep SteadySpring Tree Mats in place for 1 year plus 1 year per inch of caliper (e.g. 2 years for 1” caliper trees, 3 years for 2” caliper trees) to ensure establishment of the trees in the new environment. Rated life of SteadySpring Tree Mats is 3-5 years.
Leave out year-round - even in frozen climates! They will refill themselves with snow and rain while protecting your plants against freezing temperatures and deicing salts!
Cover with wood chips or coarse-structured mulch to help prevent direct sunlight exposure, while returning nutrients to tree roots, reducing evaporation, providing insulation to the root system, and keeping the SteadySpring mat from getting stolen! Do not use dirt/soil/fine sand/fine-structured mulch to cover SteadySpring Tree Mats because the small particles may block rainwater!
Soak first for a 1-3 hours. When the right sizes are used, SteadySpring Tree Mats will typically function for up to 30+ days without watering and maintain effectiveness for years with as little as 1 inch of rainwater per month. You could go months or years without refilling! When soaking, avoid swimming pool water as some may contain large amount of dissolved solids.
SOIL MOISTURE STABILIZER - prevents soils from getting too wet (root rot) or too dry (tree suffering). Soil will remain at a healthy, moist level for the tree to thrive. If the soil seems too dry, look at how the tree is doing or use a moisture meter to measure. A moisture rating from 4 to 7 (out of 10) is ideal for most tree species to thrive!
SteadySpring has a weed barrier top to eliminate plants and weeds growing around the root system that normally steal water and nutrients. This allows for less water to be used.

After going through 6-years of field testing and being used by professionals in the field, the Smart 30-Day Watering Mats are proven to help new trees establish, gardens grow and containers stay hydrated while you travel! Used on the Arbor Day Farm, the Smart Watering Mats will save you time and water, while protecting your precious live goods. They're easy to use and will last up to three years. How does it work? The key to the mats using so much less water is eliminating evaporation and runoff of water used to irrigate plants or trees and targeting the root zone in the soil for each plant it is watering. The top of the mats is a weed barrier, which reduces weeds and other plant life from stealing water away from your tree or plant. Inside are super absorbent hydrogels, which are agriculture grade and were invented to be used in the soil. The mats keep the gels at the surface level, which makes sure the only water they take is excess from rain, snow, or other irrigation water. The mats refill themselves with rain or sprinkler water, meaning you could go years without needing to refill them.

A question we get is if it rains enough to refill the mats, then why do I need them? The answer is evaporation. A hot summer day storm may dump an inch or two of rain, but the vast majority of that water will evaporate quickly due to the heat. The Smart Watering Mats will take the excess water, store it, and use it. In fact, with 1" of rain per 30 days, studies have shown the mats are self-sustaining with no manual filling.

If it doesn't rain at all, simply water the tree or plant like you would a couple of days in a row, and the mat will take the excess water, store it, and use it over the next few weeks.

Are the hydrogels safe? Yes! They are agriculture grade and were invented to go in the soil. If the mat ever splits, just mix the gels into the soil and mulch.

Don't waste the money. I'm not sure why this was highly rated. The one I received only fills up half the ring, leaving half the tree dry.

I was supposed to really water my new Little Gem Magnola, after it was planted last Spring. I think I fell short, with the drought last Summer, so I bought this. You have to let it soak on a bucket for some hours, while it fills up. After that, it replenishes with the rain. It's awesome! All winter, it has been working. Can't get better than that. Of course, if it is a dry season, you have to water it.

Works great, it saves our backs from having to carry water or lug the hoses all over. When it rains it fills right back up. Saves time and money. A little pricey but pays off at the end when it saves you time.

What a great idea! Only wish I had thought of it. We have areas in our yard we can't reach with a hose. So this watering circle has come in handy. It kept our Chaste Tree alive through the Texas heat this past summer only needing a bucket or two of water to keep our tree healthy. We've left it there and it's holding up extremely well. I highly recommend this item for those who don't want to be tied to a watering can.

I planted some dogwood trees on my property a couple of years ago. The trees in my backyard were doing great, while the one in my front yard was not. I thought the problem might have been not enough sun, but then it dawned on me that I wasn't watering it as often as the others because it was inconvenient to drag my hose to the front of the house. Steady spring was quick and easy to set up. After two weeks, I started to see overall improvement and new growth on the tree 🙌🏻 I like that it stores water from rain to give me a helping hand so that my tree isn't suffering when I'm being lazy or forgetful and that it will hold water from hose waterings longer and only release as needed. I will get some of these for the more robust trees when my budget allows.

This isn’t my first time leaving a review for these rings. I agree they are expensive. But I have used these for about 4 years now. I really hate to see the negative reviews because they have worked so great for me.I have thirty acres that I have filled with pecans apples and various trees and shrubs. Just guessing i have maybe twenty or more of the tree rings and a few shrub rings for my blueberries. These do work. I use them in hard to grow areas until the roots are well established. I’ve only taken up two rings to resoak them. They say 1 to 3 hours. I disagree. I put mine in 5 gallon buckets (1per) and soak overnight and adjust them some during to get better saturation.I don’t bother with mulching. Just don’t have the time but they keep the weeds back.I say if you have a place in your yard that you just can’t get a new tree to live to try one of these like I did. It worked so is well I bought more.
