My dad's from Laos and I grew up eating sticky rice. We've had the same aluminum steam pot for DECADES and the thing was finally worn out enough that we needed a new one.Amazon for the win!I ordered this that night and it came the next morning. I don't care if it's shiny or not, but I LOVE the handles! Our old "traditional" one required oven mitts or a rag to grab the pot around the rim to take it off the heat! The handles make this easy and convenient. The bottom is also a lot flatter and more uniform, making it work far better on a flat stove top. The older one we had had very steep and far more ridges on the bottom, and it took forever to heat up to a boil. Not the case with this one!Recommended! Time to make another basket of sticky rice...

The sticky rice turned out perfectly, just like if not better than what you get in a good Thai restaurant! I bought the "professional chef's set" that came with the modern alumnium pot, the bamboo basket & the bamboo lid. This also came along with a cheesecloth. The only other thing you need is glutinous sticky rice such as the one I've shown in the picture.Making the rice is easy - just follow the instructions that come in the kit .1) Soak the rice in water ( I soaked it for about 5-6 hours) - I used around 2 cups to make the quantity you see in the picture2) Put around 2 inches of water in the pot . It starts boiling on medium-high heat in around 5 minutes. The alumium heats up very quickly!3) Soak the cheesecloth & rinse the basket. Put the cheesecloth inside the basket, put the rice in the cheesecloth, fold over the ends loosely & place the basket inside the pot. Make sure its's not touching the boiling water4) Put the lid on. You will see steam rising up around the lid. The basket may not be a perfect snug fit inside the pot , but that's ok . Same for the lid.5) Steam for around 20 minutes. Keep it on medium heat6) I used the wooden paddle to turn over the rice .7) Steam for around 5 minutes moreThe rice was done, and distinctly sticky. Taste test to make sure rice is cooked.I was thinking of getting the bamboo basket that fits inside an electric cooker, but realized it would fit only around 1 or 2 cups of rice at most. The pot/basket combination could easily let you make over 4 cups at the same time. The pot is made of thin aluminium, but looks very well made. Get the one with the handles as it is convenient to move around, and empty out. Looks better polished as well, and likley a more sturdier metal grade. The bamboo basket and lid are very well made. These are supposed to be handmade by artisans in Thailand, and are very authentic.Likely the steamer can be used for other things as wlel such as wontons, etc Yet to try this.
