  • FISH COLLECTING: You are a marine researcher seeking to find and observe an array of aquatic life in the colorful Sunlight Zone, ghostly Twilight Zone, and pitch-black Midnight Zone of the world's seas and oceans.
  • PLAY IN 4 ROUNDS: Dive into the watery depths to find and observe a vast array of aquatic life over a 4 week (round) period. Each round plays quickly, and the whole game takes around an hour, depending on familiarity with the game and number of players.
  • BUILD YOUR ENGINE: Grow your collection of fish, discover freshly laid eggs, hatch eggs into young, and consolidate young to form schools. Earn points, play new fish, help others, and many other abilities! The winner is the player with the most points gained from fish, eggs, young, schools, and achievements.
  • INSPIRED BY WINGSPAN: While some of the gameplay may feel familiar from Wingspan, there are many new elements that make Finspan a fun, new experience! Finspan is a part of the World of Wingspan, along with Wyrmspan, and explores aquatic life with lighter, more entry-level gameplay mechanisms.
  • COMPETITIVE: Light-weight, card-driven board game from designers David Gordon (Monkey Palace) and Michael O’Connell, and developed by Elizabeth Hargrave (Wingspan).
  • GORGEOUS ART: Beautifully illustrated by Ana Maria Martinez (Wingspan), Catalina Martinez, and Mesa Schumacher (Eco-System: Coral Reef) with support from Natalia Rojas (Wingspan) with a lovely realistic and naturalistic art style.
  • THEMATICALLY DESIGNED MECHANISMS: Most fish cards have an ability that benefits you during the game. Many of these abilities tie into the nature of the fish represented on the card. For example, to play a predator fish, you must consume another fish on your board.
  • SOLO PLAY: Features an Automa to play against in a single player game for a fun solitaire experience. The Automa simulates an opponent for you to compete against, while your game as a player remains the same. On the Automa’s turn, flip a card to see what action it takes.
  • EXCELLENT GIFT: Great gift for families, teenagers, students, couples, and anyone who loves birds and nature.

A competitive fish collecting game

Finspan

In Finspan, the fish you discover over 4 weeks will generate a series of benefits as you dive deeper into the ocean. Each dive site specializes in a key aspect of expanding your research:

  • Grow your collection of fish
  • Discover freshly laid eggs
  • Hatch eggs into young, and nurture the young into schools

Finspan is inspired by the mechanisms of Wingspan, though its unique elements make Finpan a standalone game (not compatible with Wingspan).

As a huge fan of Wingspan, I was incredibly excited to try Finspan, and it did not disappoint! This game brilliantly captures the essence of its predecessor while introducing fresh, thematic twists that make it stand on its own. If you adore the strategic depth and elegance of Wingspan, you’ll feel right at home with Finspan. The gameplay mechanics retain that satisfying balance of strategy and luck, with new elements that keep things exciting and innovative. I particularly loved how Finspan takes the core concept of collecting and nurturing (in this case, aquatic life) and gives it a unique spin with new abilities and challenges. The components are stunning—true to the high-quality standards set by Wingspan—with beautifully designed cards and tokens that immerse you in the underwater world. What truly stood out to me was how Finspan builds on the educational aspect of Wingspan. Instead of learning about birds, you dive into fascinating facts about marine life. It’s an engaging way to expand your knowledge while competing in a fun, family-friendly setting.Overall, Finspan feels like a love letter to Wingspan fans while being its own game worth celebrating. Whether you’re a seasoned board gamer or new to the hobby, this is one title you don’t want to miss!

Between wingspan, wyrmspan, and now finspan, this game has elegantly pared down some of the mechanics, making it easy for newcomers to the game to get in. I highly recommend this as a first game of the three. I also appreciate that the game isn’t as tied to acquiring food, therefore freeing up the player to consider other strategic decision. Very much looking forward to the expansions! And it’s a relatively quick play.

This game is so good it’s actually upsetting.Good- Easy to pick up (well, easier than WingSpan & WyrmSpan)- No resources- Quick setup- EducationalBad- Might feel too easy compared to the othersNeutral- It’s fish- Component upgrades make it more enjoyable imo- Expensive (relative, the high replayability might be worth the money to most)
