Ebonizing is a process of staining wood a gray or black color through a chemical reaction with the natural tannic levels in the wood, rather than using traditional oil or water stains. The process can be enhanced by applying a coat of Tannic Acid to the wood.

My dad wanted this for the pharmacist to add to a prescription to make a cream for his psoriasis but it stains his white socks like an orangey yellow color which is awful he said he would never buy it again and also he says it doesn’t work like The pharmacist suggested

This product is falsely advertised as reagent grade crystals of tannic acid. In fact it is ground vegetable matter containing tannin, usually labeled as tannin or mixed tannins and available for substantially less money. When mixed with water, it forms a sludge which is difficult to filter, and the resulting fluid can be used for ebonizing wood but is susceptible to mold.
