This is just the sort of book that I wanted to get better at scales. I'm a beginning adult player and this book is a challenge but not so beyond my reach that I have given up. I'm still having trouble with the higher notes, but overall a good book that I'm happy to have and I use often.

Studied flute in the mid 90’s for a couple years then put it down. My teacher of blessed memory gave me a good foundation, a list of artists to listen to, and recommended high note studies to regain the embouchure after my hiatus. Fast forward to 2019- now there’s YouTube and all sorts of websites to supplement learning. Yup- Dr David Klee’s right. Master scales in the FOFP by Rearick and you’ll be a formidable flautist. But be prepared to put in lots of sweat- start at 44 bpm and slowly work up to 120. It’s painful but like classical guitar, you’ve got to be able to control the flute in order to gain freedom and fluency in your playing.

I had the privilege of studying with Professor Martha Rearick and highly recommend this book. Scales are truly "the fabric of flute playing", and playing them starting on the same note and in the same pattern every day accomplishes little. This book allows you the freedom to change articulations (slur, slur two/tongue two, etc) and patterns (dotted, triplet, etc.) based on the basic framework provided and irons out the dexterity challenges between individual notes as well as the flexibility challenge of playing through the octaves. Utilize each page to not only internalize key signatures but also to increase breath support, improve articulation, and develop technical facility. Practice mindfully and you will hear a noticeable difference in your playing.
