Product Description

  • Certain environments may require non-sparking tools in order to mitigate the risk of sparks, fires, explosions, etc. Our non-sparking items are non-metallic & non-ferrous, meaning they will not create a spark when making contact with metal surfaces.

  • A large number of our non-sparking products are made-to-order and require a 3-4 week lead time. We have a select handful of items made with aluminum bronze that we keep on hand, these will be sent out the following business day.

  • If the product purchased is made-to-order, we will unfortunately not be able to cancel it as the factory may have already started making it. Other products that we keep on hand may be canceled if it has not already shipped.

So I was a bit confused when I ordered this... I read "non sparking" and thought it was non-conductive... So I got this thinking I could use it when working on batteries without concern about crossing the terminals... But I was wrong, this is the type of metal that won't cause a spark when it hits something else... It won't spark due to impacts. I should've known better because we use brass (non sparking) punches to remove the retaining ring on automotive gas tanks when we have to replace the fuel pump. This is the same type of idea.So the continuity is around 0.8 ohms where my standard wrench was 0.4 ohms, so it is higher resistance but not enough of a difference to matter. But it is a bronze type of alloy so it won't spark from impact. I'll keep it in the "go box" so I have it on me whenever we travel.Nice wrench but just know what it is and what it isn't... :)

Review for TMAX Non-Sparking Phillips #2 screwdriver.Non-sparking tools are essential for those who are working in spaces that have significant concerns with explosions-- mining, chemical plants, etc. The other special property is that Beryllium/Bronze/Copper tools are not magnetic. (Note that there is a difference between "not-magnetized", and 'non-magnetic'. These tools are not affected by a magnetic field, and not attracted to a magnet.) That's what's useful to me. I work with some equipment that has very thin, very fragile diaphragms mounted to a strongly magnetized structure. A standard tool is pulled by the magnet when you get close, often directly into that fragile diaphragm. These make a delicate job safe. The non-magnetic property also makes them essential for working around MRI machines, for tuning some inductors, etc. The 'big dog' in the non-sparking tool marketplace is Ampco: I have a few Ampco screwdrivers, purchased years ago. The TMax is half the current cost of an equivalent Ampco. The fit and finish of the handle is better on the Ampco, although the TMax is more comfortable to hold with a rubbery texture. The machining on the tip seems equivalent. If you only occasionally need these, you'll really appreciate saving the money with the TMax. Some things to be aware of: this metal is inherently more fragile than steel. Don't be tempted to use it when a normal screwdriver will suffice, because you won't be happy when you chip a tip. If you do damage a tip, don't be tempted to re-grind it: berylium is toxic in a powdered state. This is not intended to be used to work on live electrical power: they're not magnetic, but they definitely conduct electricity, and they're not insulated. My 5-star review is definitely related to the price point: At the same price point as the Ampco, I wouldn't rate these as high. At 1/2 the price, they're very nice.

This wrench is great! I got it because most guitar output jacks and pot nuts are 1/2" or 7/16" - it's a very useful combo. But, the fit and finish on this wrench is so nice, I end up using it as a fidget device, also. The size is accurate, the balance is nice and obviously, it's aluminum-bronze and you get those benefits. It's a great wrench.

…..while this appears to be fairly well made, the head (or jaws) are not shaped the same as the photos in the ad. The profile and proportions are quite different. I suspect the size was increased to add strength to a tool that is usually made from steel. It won’t affect using it hopefully, but the size may interfere with clearance in tight spaces.Although the dimensions are clearly described, pay close attention as these are a fairly small wrench.

First off, this will still conduct electricity. This wrench simply will not make sparks when dropped or scraped against something.I misjudged the length, visually, and was expecting a bit longer wrench for leverage. It is clearly labelled on the description for it's overall length though. It fits well onto fasteners with minimal slop. I know this will wear faster than a steel wrench, but I know this is for a specialized application and won't be used nearly as often.
