After given the foam the overnight to plump up, I still get dimensions closer to 11-1/2 x 15-1/2 inches with 2 inch and 1 inch thicknesses for the thick and thin pads, respectively, so I will conclude that the 12 x 16 size listed is to be taken as a nominal dimension, but if you plan to use every big to fit to a drawer, plan around the actual dimensions accordingly. With that said, the material is the good style closed cell foam that is firm but still resilient. The layers are bonded, but with careful force, can be separated, so you can create cut-outs with varying depths. For best results, layout twice and cut with a very sharp razor knife. In my test, I rushed my layout and got a result that could have been better had I planned it a bit better. However, this foam is great to line drawers and tool boxes to secure tools in place and to create a visual indicator of which tools are in their place and which ones are out in the field. The foam is fairly easy to clean and resists oil and grease well.
