I purchased this for keeping the lid on my trash and recycle bin when it's extremely windy. This does the job of keeping the lid securely closed, so that if the can blows over, the trash stays in the bin. I can't speak to how well it works against animals, as I do not have that issue. The front of our trash can has a very long plastic piece that goes straight down, so we did have to put this on sideways instead. Still works as intended.

I opened the clear plastic envelope bag by opening the flap and pulled out the product. At its shortest length, it was about sixteen inches long. In stretching it to its fullest length, it was about 30 inches long. Neither measurement included the length of the clips.On one end is a red plastic hook with a long length to wrap around the lip of the garbage can. On the other end is one hook and a closed loop handle. The hook wraps around the lip of the garbage can and you can use the handle to pull the hook on and off the garbage can.In putting it on my round Rubbermaid Roughneck circular garbage can, it did not fit around the handles of the garbage can, as it was too short for that. However, it did fit well putting the hooks around the lips of the can itself and not around its handles.The strap is made of polyester, and the red hooks are made of hard plastic. I didn’t have any problems extending it to its minimum or its maximum length. And it stayed secure on my garbage can without any loosening over the course of a week.To test it out, I put some garbage in it, put the lid on and secured the lid with this strap to see how well it worked. A week later, the strap was still secure on top of the can and the garbage stayed inside where it belonged. The animals who live in my neighborhood were not able to get at it as a result. At one point, the wind knocked it over onto the ground, and the strap still stayed over the lid.Overall, this is a reliable, secure, and strong cord that does what I need it to do and does it well.
