This item definitely does the job it's intended for, but with a couple drawbacks.The GOOD: once installed, it does a good job of keeping the lid closed and the critters out. It also prevents wind from lifting the lid (yes, we get a lot of strong wind).The DRAWBACKS: unlike other options, this latch requires you to drill holes in the can (note: some trash companies will fine you for altering their can in any way). Once you adjust the strap tight enough to keep critters out, it can be difficult for weak or arthritic hands to open. You can't take it off on trash pickup day (the company broke one half of the latch on mine the first week).OVERALL: I would not hesitate to recommend this latch to someone who needs a way to keep their cans closed. I can imagine other uses for it as well. For my own cans, I switched to a strap I can completely remove on pickup day. It works better for me.

We live in a valley and when the wind blows it always lifts up our trash bin lid outside. Now with these it won’t open unless I unlock it. Also great if you have critters or kids.
