Product Description

UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 NVMe Enclosure with Cooling Fan

40Gbps M.2 Enclosure

How to improve the transfer rate on Windows when used with Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports?

1. The NVM and PD versions of the operating system are relatively old. Please try to update the operating system to the latest version. 2. For Windows users, please select Better performance and enable write cache: Go to Disk Management > Select Properties > Click Policies > Choose Better performance and enable write caching on the device.

Why does the enclosure heat up during using?

The enclosure uses an aluminum alloy shell with a PWM turbo cooling fan to help transfer heat from the hard drive to the outside to prevent the internal temperature from heating up. The maximum operating temperature of the enclosure is below 60°C, which is a safe range.

Why does the read and write speed of the enclosure decrease after running for a while?

The maximum transfer rate of the enclosure can reach 40Gbps. High-speed transfer makes the hard disk heat up. If the temperature is too high, the controller of the enclosure and SSD may activate thermal throttling protection, automatically reducing the transfer speed to protect the hardware from damage.

Does it support double-sided SSDs or SSDs with built-in heat sinks?

No, it does not support double-sided SSDs or SSDs with built-in heat sinks.

Works fast when it works but it runs really hot and works worse when it’s hot. Also the wire connection was unstable so I had to buy a different connector. Not impressed for the price.

Works good with both USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 4. M.2 SSD maintained good temperature while copying large files.

I’ve been using the UGREEN 40GB Enclosure with my Samsung EVO 970 Plus SSD, and here’s my honest experience after testing it thoroughly.Build Quality & DesignThe design is sleek and premium, with a solid aluminum casing that feels durable. Installation was simple, and I appreciate that UGREEN includes a thermal pad, a screwdriver, and an extra screw—small details that make a difference. The package also comes with two cables: a USB-C to USB-C (Thunderbolt) and a USB-A to USB-C, making it versatile for different setups. One of my favorite features is the silicone grip, which adds protection and makes handling safer, especially since the enclosure can get warm. Its compact size also makes it very portable, which is great for on-the-go use.Performance & Heat ManagementRight from the moment it’s connected, the enclosure gets warm and heats up further during data transfers. While this is expected for NVMe enclosures, the heat level feels noticeable. The built-in fan does help with cooling, but it has a slight noise. In a work environment, it’s barely noticeable, but in a quiet home setting, you might hear it when everything else is silent. However, the noise isn’t loud enough to be disruptive.Connection StabilityThis is where I faced some issues. I experienced frequent disconnections and automatic reconnections, which interrupted my workflow, especially since I initially used it to install and run apps on my Mac mini M4. This became frustrating as it caused apps to crash or stop working. (I installed Xcode & Android Studio), I know they're heavy, but the connection also happened even before installing those heavy ones, you would only notice when a warning appears on your screen saying that it's re-connected, but that will in a second cause your Apps to freeze, and you're work to be lost.Because of this, I stopped using it for apps and instead repurposed it for Time Machine backups and general storage. Since making this change, I have had no issues so far.Speed & CompatibilitySpeed tests on my Internal Mac mini M4 (256 GB Model) showed read & write speeds between 1900-2700 MB/s, while for the EVO970 Plus in the UGREEN 40 GB Enclosure it shows 1400-3000 mb/s. which is slower than the SSD’s or Mac Capabilities or even the Enclosure features, but due to I have no other read SSD to test, I cannot actually determine where the slowing coming from, but I thought it’s worth noting.

Bought a new Mac Mini M4. Also, bought a Samsung 990 pro 1TB to put in the enclosure. Everything connected fine but as soon as I connected it to the Mac the fan came on after about 5 minutes and does not turn off for as long as I'm using the Mac.I have since found out that the fan comes on after the drive reaches about 45 degrees Celsius. To make matters worse the fan is very distracting (high pitch whine) and there seemingly is no way to turn the fan off. ALWAYS ON!When I googled this issue, there seems to be others who are complaining of the same thing.I can't send it back as I need the info thats on the drive. Stuck with it! Going to order another enclosure. Maybe one that passively cools this time. When I'm wearing headphones I cant hear the fan. But when i'm not it can get annoying real quick.

Enclosures get hot, I bought this one because of the fan. It does nothing and after about 10 minutes of use, it will disconnect due to the heat. Once it's hot, transfer speeds are about 100+MB/s .. I will be getting a refund and suggest you save yourself the trouble of buying this only to return it.

Using it with my new Mac and wanted a dependable fast drive. This hits the mark on both accounts. The ease of installation a good size heat putty and solid construction has made using a 2tb drive fast and efficient. I use these drives for remote work and to get additional storage instead of paying those exorbitant storage costs from Apple. Does not slow my work down and will be purchasing at least on more for my other 2 tb drive.

Looks neat, the sheath it goes into is non-slippery and holds the enclosure in place. My main gripe with the product as a whole is it comes with a short thunderbolt cable... about 6 inches and I can't comfortably use it. I have to prop it with something for it to reach the thunderbolt port at the back of my pc and not cover up any of the coolings vents on either side of the enclosure. It does get kind of hot and if you block a vent, it will overheat and cause issues in performance, including your PC loosing connection to the SSD.

very fast, maybe the fastest in the market, The flip side is that the included cable is terrible and keeps disconnecting, I upgraded to a real USB4 cable and the disconnections stopped.also the design of the cooling system could be better, the enclosure still gets over 45c

The product feels solid with no rattling. I paired this with the Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M2 SSD and got 3,000 MB/s readwrite speeds. It can probably be faster with different cables or something but for now it's good enough. The cooling just sucks. I don't understand why there's a fan inside when it seems like the heat is being exchanged through the thermal pad to the lid of the enclosure. The lid appears to have short fins like a heat sink.I migrated 1.8 TB to this drive and it handled it OK. The enclosure got really got and disconnected a few times (probably due to heat). I ended up using an external fan to flow on top of the lid to keep it cool.I'll have to use this for a few months as my primary storage for video editing. This was by first step in building some kind of storage solution at home. I wanted to buy an SSD enclosure so that I can use the SSD until I can eventually piece together a RAID or NAS solution.
