Pysanky, the plural form of pysanka, is from the Ukrainian word "pysaty" meaning "to write." Pysanky eggs are traditionally decorated for religious Orthodox Easter celebrations and are adorned with amazingly complex hand-drawn designs. Using guidelines to section off an egg into a basic grid pattern, pysanky eggs are then detailed within the grid, then the pencil lines are covered with beeswax and layered with vibrant colors of dye. The process is similar to the batik painting done on fabric. Our pysanky dye kits have a brilliant rainbow of colors to choose from so you can express your artistic side in every hue. Our dye starter kits come with everything - egg-cept the eggs!
Tips for dyeing your Easter eggs
Before you begin coloring your Easter eggs, always make sure to wash your hands thoroughly as the natural oils on your hands can get on the egg shells and cause uneven dyeing. Another tip is to always start with room temperature eggs, as cold eggs will sweat as they warm up and can ruin your pencil lines or your dye. For best results, we recommend emptying your egg before decorating the eggshell so your handiwork will last for years to come. Pysanky can even be handed down as family heirlooms to be displayed with pride!
