I got this to fix a fiber optic lamp and it worked perfectly. I have enough left to fix another 400 lamps. Perfect.

I have some plans for an art installation using some fiber lights, so I ordered this, and have been running some tests on it since. Happily, it's been working exactly as expected, so I think my plan is going to work well.First of all, it comes on a *giant* spool; I think this is probably necessary to prevent over-bending, but it was a little surprising at first. The fiber itself is easy to work with; you can cut it with scissors, or if you have a thicker cable, you can use a rotary tool with a cutoff wheel. To get the best light transmission, you'll want to polish the ends somehow (for the cable of fibers, I again just used a rotary tool with a polishing tip).Other than that, it works just like expected. Light transmission is good, and the fiber is in good shape and doesn't break easily. You get an awful lot (over a 1.6 miles!) so there's plenty of fiber to work with.

For a long while I have thought about using optical fiber light to create illuminated artwork, home decoration, clothing accessories and much more. The photos attached are all of the same 4 foot piece of fiber cut into short lengths and bundled with heat shrink tubing, taped to a single 5mm 12 volt DC LED with foil tape, then attached to a 9 volt battery. Light has so many possibilities!Whether sheathed or unsheathed the illuminated fibers take on their own quality that could be used to light-up such things as holiday wreaths and decorations, interiors of tool or other drawers, underwater areas, and as many other items as there are ideas (unlimited). I'm just beginning to formulate plans for the many things I'm going to try to invent.I'm currently thinking about how I can illuminate a 3D counter top by using LEDs and optical fibers, sealed with epoxy or similar. How about winter gloves lighted all the way to the fingertips, so that when you need to install chains (or similar activity) you could keep your hands warm and dry and not fuss with holding a flashlight? Maybe flexible light whips that plug directly into your phone USB so you can illuminate under appliances and similar for cleaning and searching for lost items? Endless possibilities!Even if those items are already available, I want to be able to improve on them, and this roll of optical fiber is going to make that possible. I've been looking for something to do with all the electronic device power supplies I have collected in a box in the garage and it seems that i have found a use for them. This is far better than a toy or game for me, and I get to make tools which I also enjoy! I'm truly happy that I found this item!MY RATING SYSTEM: Based on all things being “average” until I discover otherwise, with focus on accurate, not over or under ratings. Average is middle 3.0-Star not 5.0-Star. Partial scores will be rated higher if over half point, lower if under half point. Rating scores may be revised at a later date if there is a reason to do so that was originally unforeseen.5-STAR = Much better than advertised and/or expected. Claims are realistic; ratings & certifications are appropriate and checked out where possible. Exceeds 4-STAR. “ WOW” kind of items definitely recommended.4-STAR = As expected or better. Claims are realistic; ratings & certifications are appropriate and checked out where possible. Fairly priced, good quality & usability, not likely to fall apart. “KEEP & USE” items to be recommended or purchased again repeatedly as needed.3-STAR - As expected. Claims are realistic; ratings & certifications are appropriate and checked out where possible. Items are good quality, well finished, and priced fairly however nothing stands out. Examples include mass-produced “ME-TOO” items for sale under many different names.2-STAR = Not as good as expected. The item works, but does not quite meet specifications of 3 STAR or better as described above. “NEEDS IMPROVEMENT”1-STAR = Far below expectation. Claims, ratings, certifications are blatantly inaccurate and/or inappropriate. Low quality possibly resulting in failure, injury or worse; poor durability. “NOT RECOMMENDED”

You get a LOT of this on a spool. I didn't unspool it and measure it because I'd have to use my car's odometer to do it. I've bought plastic optical fiber before and this is by far the cheapest I've ever found it.Plastic optical fiber has a lot of potential practical or artistic uses. I got it because I've been getting into poured epoxy, and it's great for a starry night look. But you can use it to make overhead or free standing light fixtures with some pretty amazing effects, or wall art, or anything involving points of light. A heat gun or flame to a tip can make it ball up to a glowing bead if you're careful. It's fun, versatile stuff, and you get plenty to play around with. This is plastic by the way, not glass, so it's a lot safer to use in craft projects. It cuts easily with scissors -- I threw together the "lab test" in the photo in about a minute. Endless craft project possibilities, really.

my hopes were to be able to create starry headliner DIY kits for vehicles as a way to offer more services at my place of business as a mechanic.i had expected that the light emittance from this fiber would be suitable however, it seems to be fairly dim. that is not to say that it does not emit any light at all - but from a qualified LED light engine/device that is widely used in like installations - it does not produce a satisfactory result that i would feel confident enough to put my signature on by installing in to a customer's vehicle.i did not test this with a cheap, underrated or otherwise dull , low rated led motor, either. i did test on multiple led motors that i have in stock, brand new & varying in rating.for someone who is just using this for their own purpose or would not mind investing in a more expensive led component to compensate for the lack of light travel capability of this fiber - it would suit your needs. it just would not be financially wise or sensible for me. like i said - it is not terrible, it does emit light like the fiber lights from the 90s we all had... or if you are purchasing this for a different purpose all together - it very well may suit your needs.

Keeping in mind this is designed to be used as an end glow fiber, it's bright at the ends. You will not see any light emission out of the side of the plastic. I only point this out as I've had people ask why there isn't any light showing along the sides of the material.Easy to use - simply cut with a hot knife or I suppose an Exacto blade, box cutter or scissors. I think it's a good quality fiber and you get a lot of material for the price.
